Anxiety and speech impediments

Has anyone had problems with speaking or presenting while under an anxiety attach. I've read that valium can cause speech problems in certain individuals so I'm reluctant to take it if that is true. I'd rather be a bit anxious and be able to communicate than studder through my presentation.

Any thoughts?

If you are having stage fright or having problems speaking in an interview without your voice trembling  (anxiety), the Valium will probably help you.  If you have a speech impediment such as stuttering, there are medications that can help this, and I think Valium is one of them.  If you've been prescribed the medication for this, then take it.  I've never heard of Valium causing or aggravating stuttering.  Slurred speech might occur in cases of too much Valium, but 5 mg of Valium - if a doctor has prescribed Valium to you to help get through an interview - will be fine to take.  If it were me, I'd take it about 30 minutes before the interview.

Hi,

Beta-blockers are also used to help people who experience stage fright - it helps control the effects from the "surge" of adrenhalin such as rapid heart rate, shakiness, sweaty palms etc.  Because some medications effect different people in different ways it is always a good idea to "try" the medicine first to make sure you dont experience any undesirable side effects.  I have not heard of medications causing speech impediments but trying the medication first can elevate your concerns.

It has also been my personal experience, and observation, that even though if you feel very nervous during a presentation (YOU feel that you have a shaky voice etc.), the audience is often not even aware of this and does not even notice - in other words your perception of the event is quite different from theirs!  Also, the first few mins of a presentation are often the most nerve racking but after that the nerves dye down quite substantially.

Thanks so much for your posts. I actually decided not to take the valium before the call as my anxiety level had declined considerably. All reports are that the call was a success--much to my relief.

Thanks again for your posts and support.

LOL! That's wonderful  (that the call was a success after all that worrying! :)  I've been away for a while and just now saw your note.  So glad it went good for you.  Best to you.
