by Ed33, Oct 15, 2007 02:28PM
I recently stop taken full 1mg pill of zanax at niight to go to bed now I have been taking .50 mg durning the day. The problem is that the past three days about the same in the day I get really dry mouth, my nose gets stuffy, and I feel like I can't breath like my air way in my throat is really contricted. So I take the .50mg of xanax like 30 mins to 45 mins I start to feel better so is this anxiety or my body telling me to take a xanax? If anybody has any info on this it would be great thanks.

Your body is dependent on the Xanax at a paticular time of the day and will tell you when it is time to  take one.  Your symptoms are those of mild withdrawal and rebound blood pressure.  If you are going to reduce medication, then do what you are doing, split the dosage up during the day.  You are taking 1mg at night, then start taking half in the early daytime and half at the regular time.  Do this for about a week to get your body used to the change before attempting on reducing the dosage. Then when you feel comfortable with the split dose, half the dosage to .25 and take that 3 times a day (3/4mg) for a week or so, then stop the middle dose. When the body is used to that reducation, reduce by dropping one of the two dosages back to once a day, and when the body is used to that in a week or two, then stop altogether.  Watch out for rebound high blood pressure.  Withdrawal from this med will often give you a bout of high blood pressure even if you don't normally suffer from high blood pressure.  If this problem occurs, talk to the doctor about a temporary dosage of blood pressure meds to get you off the Xanax totally which takes about 2-3 weeks after the final dose  good luck.
