Anxiety/sleep starts after surgery

by deefrances, Dec 09, 2007 12:42PM
I recently had a 7 hour gynocologic and cosmetic surgery.  Within a few days I couldn't sleep because I would wake myselft up with "sleep starts" just as I was falling asleep, over and over again.  I have felt very anxious about everything and anything, which I'm sure is compounded by the lack of sleep.  One of my doctors gave me 0.5 Xanex (1 at bedtime) which seems to work pretty well, but last night the dreams were wicked!  My hormone doctor seems to feel that my symptoms are related to hormone inbalances since I had my ovaries removed.  I have to wait another 6 weeks to test my hormone levels to give my body a chance to "calm down". I feel like I'm going crazy - never had anything like this happen.  I even have that "lump in the throat" feeling.

I am wondering if what I am experiencing is related to the anesthesia and pain meds I received.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  I get very anxious in the evenings as bedtime approaches as I know what I am in for.  I've also experienced cold hands and toes on and off throughout the day.  I am very concerned about becoming addicted to any medications - I have taken only bio-identical hormones for the last two years.

Or is it simply that I've now developed an anxiety disorder for reasons (I guess) related to the surgery?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  This is all very new for me.   I don't even know where to start with doctors - sleep study, psychiatrist, endo, what to do?  I had 3 doctors involved in my surgery and each one has a different idea.
