Anxiety while on Antibotics

Has anyone taken Avelox 400mg. an antibotic (antibiotic).  I have been taking now for 7 days and it has been hell for me.  About an hour after I take it, I start to get anxiety and then I start to hyperventilate.  My doctor thinks it not the Avelox because he has never had a patient complain about anxiety/hyperventilation.  He said just take a Xanax to help you through and tough it out.. How many Xanax do you have to take to calm down.   Well, Xanax only helps for a short while and then I'm back to hyperventilating.  I fine up to the point that I have taken Avelox and an hour later I start to feel anxiety/hyperventilation.   Avelox is in the family such as Levaquin, cipro.   I know it's not all in my head.  I just hate it.

I have never taken Avelox, but I took an antibiotic called Cefuroxime, that gave me bad side effects, bad anxiety.  I stopped taking it immediately, and called the doctors office, he changed the med to Bactrim, no side effects.    

Try calling the National poison control center or your local pharmacist, tell them your symptoms using the medication.  They can provide you information, med interaction etc.....  They are very helpful.

Definatly could be the avelox. That is part of the quinolone family and I had a horrible experience with levaquin and cipro. Now refuse to ever take that class of drugs again. I also had other bad side effects from levaquin that involve joint aching and neuropathy. Had all kinds of bloodwork done even autoimmune. Nothing showed up. Had to see a Rheumatologist thay agree it had to be levaquin. My side effects have lessened, but still get things to this day. It will be a year in Dec 28. Look up the quinolone side effects on the web. You will find all kinds of things on it.

I once had bad anxiety from Septra (same as Bactrim I think) after taking it for just one day. I had terrible visions of wanting to peel off my tattoo from my skin, or I worried that I would crush my little dog's ribs by petting her. My skin felt red hot and crawly. It was terrible! I went off it immediately the next day and gradually started to feel better.

I think many antibiotics can cause anxiety side affects, because they mess with your bodies chemicals.  I took Macrobid on two seperate occassions for seven days each and both times experienced severe anxiety reactions, i.e. chest pain, dizziness and insomnia.  Bottom line, if it is crucial that you need a antibiotic take it and tough it through, but if it is not absolutely neccissary don't put yourslef through the trouble.

I have been taking Avelox since this past Sunday, 12/30. Since that day I've been having such severe anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide but not actually wanting to do it - just thinking about it all the time, tremors, butterflies in my stomache, etc.
So bad that I actually went to a Psychologist on Thursday night! After 6 long hard days of suffering with these symptoms and trying to deal with the fact that I've gone crazy, I decided to read the side effects in the pamphlet they give you. Side effects are all of those things so I am not going to be taking it anymore. Glad some of you realized it was the antibiotic in time, wish I would have!

I took Levaquin (also from the quinone family) and had the worst anxiety of my life.  Thought dark, violent thoughts.  I had to have my parents drive home to be with me (and I'm 38).  I still occasionally will have flare ups that I attribute to this horrible drug.
