Anxiety will never go away

Hello. I have CFIDS/ME triggered by Lyme borreliosis. It's caused retrovirus (think HIV), only not deadly of course. It only causes torture, low Natural Killer cell counts, and reduced immunity. I'm so happy a retrovirus was found for an otherwise unexplainable disease, but in the mean time, there is no treatment.

Anyway, since being ill, the anxiety doesn't go away. The anxiety is not about anything. It never has been.

Triggers are things that are fun, exciting, and stimulating. Stimulus in general. Loud Noise. Light (fluorescent). Riding in a car. Exertion (even walking short distances. Standing (I have orthostatic intolerance). Cold. Heat. A virus will increase anxiety 10-fold needing to double or triple tranquilizers for a couple days.

I have tried neurofeedback, biofeedback, hypnotherapy, meditation, breathing, counseling, PTSD therapies (such as EMDR), etc.

Counseling was the biggest waste of time and sent me several steps backwards after I crashed harder after the counselor was trying to get me to do things. None of these really helped. Hypnotherapy helps a tiny bit, but there is always a rebound.

I have chest pain that doesn't go away. Anxiety isn't the cause, but orthostatic intolerance (standing) can amplify these symptoms. Anxiety can make the chest pain, or any other symptom of mine worse. I think the same can be said for anybody.

I went to the E.R. after the after effects of a virus. The virus caused extreme fear that lasted several days, but I am returning back to baseline.

If I go to the E.R. and put down the word anxiety as a primary complaint, I basically get ignored, so I don't do that.

I put down chest pain, and the E.R. doc thought pericarditis (infection of the heart) was causing my chest pain after EKG and blood work. After this, I told him I wasn't worried about that symptom so much, I am worried about uncontrollable fear (caused by nothing psychological). Since I appeared calm to him, he didn't bother to scan my head.

The anxiety/fear was partially relieved by an anti-inflammatory called toradol. I was able to sleep after they infused me with it.

Over the next few days, and after some more anti-inflammatories, my anxiety slowly returned backed to baseline. It's like spraining an ankle, and your ankle progressively heals. It's pretty much the same thing.

However, I want the anxiety (a proper word may be toxic encephalitis) to be gone. I've been thinking about off-label use of a drug like Namenda (alzheimer's drug) or LDN (low-dose naltrexone). I can't get a doc to write a prescription for the alzheimers one, but I would like to try it because of the low toxicity profile. I may just order it online. Things that lower glutamate seems to help. Daily vitamin B12 injections are what have made me more functional, but it's no cure.

I have trouble metabolizing drugs that are hard on the liver and use cytochrome P450. They can cause and have caused severe ADRs.

Anti-depressants are out of the question. They all make me very anxious to the point where I can be non-communicative and scared out of my mind.

Oh, I am on the beta blocker propanolol for tachycardia, anxiety, and orthostatic issues.

Sick since Dec 7, 2008. 24 years old and I have been determined as physically disabled as well.

You may find neurontin may also benefit you in your quest to taper off benzo's.

"One study also demonstrates a significant reduction in the severity of benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome."

Thanks. Yes, I have had neurontin offered once, but I forgot about it. That's something I actually haven't tried.

If tolerated it would probably help.

I am just on so many benzodiazepines, that I'd like to taper off at least half of them before trying another GABA drug. Benzos saved me, but their efficacy now is questionable when sticking to my regular dose.

Have you ever tried Neurontin or Lyrica, or heard of it's use for CFS?
I don't think it is approved for this but I'm not sure about off label use.
Neurontin is said to be of some benefit for some anxiety suffers.
Just a thought....
Oh I also recently read something about IVIG (immunoglobulins) being used for CFS.  But that's all I recall, sorry.
Good luck to you and take care.
