Anyone ever experience depression on Klonopin

by mama23babies, Aug 21, 2009 03:01PM
I just got switched to Klonopin from xanax. I was only on the xanax maybe a week and felt fine, but I had problems with hydrocodone and the Doc says that xanax is too dangerous for me. I have only taken 3 doses of the Klonopin and every time I get aggitated and depressed and cry for like an hour. Has anyone else ever had worsening depression while taking Klononpin.

FYI I just started taking zoloft today and also take propanonol.

This is because Xanax can be very addictive.  The way my doctor explained it was that Xanax is like nicotine from a cigarette.  It enters your body, but burns through quickly.  The sudden "end" of the drug burning through the system can cause you to crave more.  If you have had addiction issues in the past, this may be why he put you on Klonopin.  It lasts in your system longer and is not an abrubt end.  I was VERY addicted to Xanax when I found my current doctor.  He switched me to Klonopin, which has worked for me.  Give the medications some time.  I KNOW how hard that is!  It will get better over time.  If it isn't, contact your doctor!!  And know you have support here. :)

But...Is the depression, agitation and mood swings normal when first starting Klononpin? I am so glad I found this site. Anxiety is very scary and panic attacks are even scarier. It's nice to know that I am not the only one. Although I feel bad and pray for each and everyone on here that does experience this. Also do you know if you can take the xanax if a panic attack comes on while taking the Klonopin?

I wish I had an easy answer for you.  I am not a doctor so really, I don't know.  The Klonopin is supposed to act like the Xanax.  Your mood swings may be just from finding everything out and starting meds.  When I was diagnosed ADD, I was told I will go through the grieving process because all my life something was wrong and I didn't know what it was.  You may (or may not) need to go through the same process.  I defiantly went off my antidepressants when I would feel better, then crash.  It took me a long time to accept myself as I am and be ok with the possibility that I very well could be on antidepressants the rest of my life.

Talk to your doctor.  If they get defensive because you are asking questions, find a new doctor!
