Best Medication for Anxiety?

Could someone share with me what medications have worked best for their anxiety, and has the least side effects? I am presently taking 1800mg of Gabapentin and still feel like I have alot of anxiety issues. I have told my phsyciatrist this and he just tells me that I have to work on my anxiety issues. I feel like I'm trying to work on them, but I just can't ever seem to truly relax. I am a constant worrier, and would like to not feel like this all the time. You name it I can find a reason to worry about it. Thanks for any advice.

From all of the research I've done it looks like Lexapro probably has the best benefit-to-side-effect ratio.

For straight results, Paxil is great. But, it is one of the biggest ones when it comes to side-effects.

IMHO - In my humble opinion.

I agree with the other posters also - talk to a doctor about changing medications.  Most "regular" doctors have very little training with regards to psychiatry so a psychiatrist would be the best person to talk too.  There are formally trained and have years of experience in dealing w/ people just like yourself and would be able to make more appropriate recommendations regarding choice of medication.

If your dad thinks that gabapentin is ineffective for anxiety, why did my psychiatrist prescribe it for me? I told him on my last visit that I still had alot of anxiety and I've been on this since Feb. of this year. He just told me that I need to work on my anxiety problems and talk to my threapist about it. I did try Lexapro and it raced my heart. I've read good thing on this forum about Klonopin. does you dad have any opinion about this drug?

Hi Suzzie, my dad is a psychiatrist and he happen to read your question and he says that gabapentin is basically ineffective in treating anxiety disorders, it's just not the drug of choice.  He says a that the standard of care is the use of seratonergic medication such as Paxil and/or Lexapro and/or many others like this....but you should speak to your own dr...(so tjalsma and tabithashea are correct)....

I agree with Tjalsma, Paxil worked wonders for me. Since going on the Paxil I've had no more anxiety or panic attacks, not one. However I'm now off because I'm pregnant but it worked well for me. Neurontin which you now take is not the best choice IMHO.

Speak with your doctor.  There are many different medications for anxiety/depression, all which affect everyone differently.

I was taking Paxil CR and was loving it, when they got rid of that I couldn't take Paxil anymore.  Sometimes the smallest thing can make a huge difference.

Speak with your Doctor about alternate medications.
