Can I take these meds while ttc????

I am taking 400 mg of Spironolactone for acne and 10 mg of Klonopin once a day for anxiety. Can I take these drugs until I become pregnant? Or do I have to stop now?

Something else to consider that's not always included in officially reported drug risks is that any drug that affects the brain can be harmful to a fetus or newborn because humans take a long time for the brain to fully develop.  This is also a reason to avoid as many toxins as you can, because the immune system also takes a while to develop.

Hello and welcome!

Typically, it's recommended to discontinue any med that would be contraindicated in pregnancy.  This is something you'd definitely have to discuss with your doctor, the sooner the better, to allow yourself time to taper off (the Klonopin especially).

Here is a list of the pregnancy risk categories for medications, with a description of what each category means:

Category A
Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters).

Category B
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

Category C
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Category D
There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Category X
Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.

Category N
FDA has not classified the drug.

For your medications, Klonopin is rated a "D" risk medication which would almost certainly not be recommended to continue.  Only in rare cases would a doctor recommend continuing with a "D" (or worse) rated medication as the risks usually far outweigh the benefits.  Again, that's something to discuss with your doc (OB).

The Spironolactone is rated a "C" risk medication which may be okay to continue taking, again, that would be up to you and your doc to determine.

You're on a significant dose of Klonopin, which is why I recommend figuring out the plan asap.  You do NOT want to find yourself pregnant having to come off the Klonopin without the benefit of a SLOW and gradual taper.

Best of luck to you in your TTC endeavors!
