Can anxiety during a mild allergic reaction mimic anaphylaxis
If hives with stomach cramps, diarrhoea and fast heart rate presented but all vital signs were normal and doctors said it wasn't anaphylaxis, what caused the fast heart rate?  Could it be anxiety caused by the initial mild allergic reaction?

If  your doctors said it was NOT anaphylaxis, then I would believe them. You would also KNOW the difference between a mild allergic reaction and anaphylaxis!

A warning sign of dangerous throat swelling is a very hoarse or whispered voice, or coarse sounds when breathing in air.

Anaphylaxis is an EMERGENCY CONDITION that needs medical attention right away..........CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!

Symptoms develop quickly, often within seconds or minutes and MAY include any of the following symptoms............

Abnormal (high-pitched) breathing sounds
Anxiety
Chest discomfort or tightness
Cough
Difficulty breathing
Difficulty swallowing
Dizziness or light-headedness
Hives, itchiness
Nasal congestion
Nausea or vomiting
Palpitations
Skin redness
Slurred speech
Swelling of the face, eyes, or tongue
Unconsciousness
Wheezing

The rapid heart rate you experienced WAS, most likely, caused by anxiety as I'm sure this experience scared you.

Most people with severe and life threatening allergies carry an epi-pen and also wear a medical medallion alerting people, most especially first responders, to their condition.

If you are in this category, you REALLY need to sit down with your doctor and discuss your options during a crisis.

If this was your first experience with an allergic reaction, I still believe it would be wise for you to see your doctor and possibly an allergist to figure out what your trigger is.

Please see your doctor. Better to be safe...............

Apparently the trigger is unknown and they just gave me anti histamine tablets.

They said in most mild to moderate allergy cases the trigger is unknown and can't be determined. They said about in 70% of cases.

Really don't know what to say. But if the doctors don't feel you're at risk, then, as I said before, you should probably believe them.

If you have another "attack," use the pills and if that relieves your symptoms, I hope that will ease your mind.

And just to reiterate what I said, and I believe the doctors felt the same way..........your rapid heart rate was due to anxiety and nothing else.

Peace

Thanks for the reassurance. The doctor I normally go to knows I've had hayfever, skin allergies etc but he's never mentioned any risk of serious allergies either.

I also sometimes get itchy skin above my lips when I eat certain liquid based foods but I don't think that's an allergy because it's very minor, I can just ignore it and carry on eating it. And normally it goes away as soon as I stop eating. There's no swelling or redness or anything so I suspect it's just acidic things irritating my lips etc.
