Celexa and Withdrawal

I just started taking Celexa 20mg for anxiety/panic attacks about three days ago and since it is the first time I have ever taken any kind of antidepressant I am extremely nervous. I have been reading about withdrawal symptoms and am wondering if the withdrawal is severe or permanent because I am weighing my options here. Should I take it for the time my doctor wants me on it, and then get off of it only to have major withdrawal that some say never goes away...or should I stop it now before my brain becomes accustomed to it and deal with the anxiety and panic that I have.. Any information on this would greatly be appreciated. My mom takes Celexa at 40mg for two years now along with Zantac and she swears by it. However, she is going to be on it for quite the long term. As I am still in my twenties, I do not want to be on meds for the rest of my life unless extremely necessary....

Hi crazygirl!  You've replied to an older post here at med help but I wanted to thank you for sharing your personal story.  I'm glad the Celexa helped you and you are feeling better.  If you begin to have trouble with withdrawel symptoms, you can slow down your taper even more if necessary.  And it is good to know that a medication has worked for somebody and they feel so much better that they feel it is time to stop taking it.  You are now aware of the symptoms of anxiety/depression and can visit your doctor if you see a re-emergence of symptoms.  Lots of luck to you and I love when people share their success stories.  Don't be a stranger to med help!  Peace

Just to put your mind at ease. I am on 20 mgs and have been for over 6 months. I have severe anxiety and well as depression.  It has helped me greatly and now I am weening myself off of the medication. Starting tomorrow I will start to taper off By going down to 10 mg for 1 week then down to 5mg the second week then I will be done. I know it has been a Godsend to me. Everyone is different, but if you are doing good then I would say don't worry. Let the medication do it's job and help you.
