There is a root issue to salve and the medication taken is only a band-aid for the symptoms - not the cure.
Checking your thyroid levels may be good to see where you are but in many cases the only thing tested is the TSH.
Your free T3 hormone is your anxiety/thyroid monitor along with the Free T4 conversion into T3.
Those test must be done with the TSH to see if those levels are off.
I am hypothyroid, but my symptoms are out of line for being barely hypo. They think the citolpram will help me get through these symptoms, but I'm afraid I'll be more tired...
Have your thyroid and parathyroid tested as well as looking at a possibile "Vegus Nerve" problem
I have been on Citolopram for 3 1/2 years, and never had any side effects at all. I work while taking this and deal with a lot of numbers crunching which requires that I be functional and clear minded. I have seen no reason not to take it. I hope you experience the same. Good luck and take care.

It's hard to say how you'll react to this med because we're all so different. I can only give you my experience, which could be very different from yours. I've been on several meds and usually the first couple of days are the worst. A little dizziness and nausea.
I hope your Dr explained it can take a few weeks to see results so you have to be patient. I hope this med works for you. Remar
