Conversion Disorder help needed

by csk47, Jul 08, 2009 08:14AM
My 37 year old daughter has been plagued since age 15 with physical symptoms that, after years of testing, we are now sure amounts to Conversion Disorder.  Two days ago the symptoms were so bad she could not move a muscle or even speak.  The paralysis is sometimes mild, sometimes bad and totally unpredictable.  Sometimes her muscles just tense up, sometime she can't walk.  It is getting more and more debilitating.  She has gone a few years without symptoms from time to time but now it has gotten much worse than ever.
We had been told for years that this was stress related but we kept searching for a neurological answer. She has been through every test imaginable.   My daughter has three children and is desperate to find help but the psychiatrist she is seeing has never dealt with a condition like hers.  Can you PLEASE give me some names of doctors who specialize in Conversion Disorder?  She lives near Indianapolis but is willing to go anywhere for treatment.  What the insurance doesn't pay, we will.  Please help us.

Dr. Barbara Coffey at New York University is one of the top experts in somatoform and conversion disorders (she has published over 70 studies on the topic). However, most of her work involves children and adolescents. Her affiliation is with the NYU Child Study Center. However, she might see your daughter (especially if your daughter has been suffering from this she was 15), or at least give you some names of other specialists. You can try sending her an email (I'll send you the address as a private message) briefly describing your daughter's situation.
