Dieting and Anxiety

by kimberlyrcrow, Aug 01, 2008 11:21AM
I was just wondering if anyone has heard that dieting can cause Anxiety and depression. I suffer from both of these but have noticed that a major episode will happen when I diet. I had been dieting for about 6 weeks maybe and two weeks ago this Sunday an episode started. There seems to be a pattern in this. When I am in this I feel like it will never end and that there is no hope. They do let up after a few weeks. As I said this one will be two weeks this coming Sunday and I feel like there is no hope. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this. Thanks.

Namaste,

A lot has to do with what kind of diet your trying.

If you're eating a well balanced meal(s) and adding exercise, I wouldn't think you'd have a problem, but starvation diets don't work and can cause side effects.

Hope this helps.

if by diet u meaning restricting ur calories to a lower number than what ur body is used to or cutting some foods out and exercising more than yes it will increase anxiety. Its due to stress ..anytime u exercise or not eat when ur hungary  u put ur body into stress mode and eventually anxiety mode. but the thing is that once you eat right and exercise regularly ur body adjusts and if u stay on the same plan then its actually very beneficial for u. Stop doing on a off diets..they dont work.

Well, this is the third time this has happened to me. You would think I would have learned by now. The Anxiety and depression  will last for about 2 to three weeks. Tomorrow will be two weeks. The problem is though once this starts I have a hard time eating, because I have no desire to cause I am too depressed. I think what was happening is I cut my calories down way to far and through my body and brain out of order.
