I am going to try Elavil 10mgs again.. and hoping I don't get any side effects such as racing heart, etc. One of my concerns is that Elavil 10mgs does not give me any sedating effects; it does the opposite. Is there anything else that I can take while on Elavil that can aide with my sleep? I am to be on 10mgs for at least 4 weeks. My doctor wants me to take it slow. Thanks.

That isn't good (that it has the opposite effect). Have you been exposed to Benzodiazepines or comparable agents (ie: AmbienAmbien Ambien cr, LunestaLunesta)? If so, The Elavil may be (probably will be) less effective until any withdrawal phenomena subside. The Elavil may take up to one month for the full benefit to be obtained as well.
Try the 10 mg for four weeks, as ordered by the doctor. If you can tolerate the 10 mg, the dosage can then be increased to 25 mg (and to 50 mg, etc) until the desired effect is established. If Elavil does not help you, you could also inquire about Pamelor (Nortriptyline), which is similar, but slightly different compared to Elavil.
