Fear of Not Waking Up

I've been treated for anxiety and depression for almost three years now and this past year I've been going on and off Zoloft and Wellbutrin to try and figure out what was making me so unbelievably nauseous, for I had a stomach problem all last year that messed up my meds. So now I am completely off the Zoloft and Wellbutrin and feeling fine until this morning when I tried to go to sleep and it was the most terrifying experience. Every time I'd doze off my body would jolt awake and I'd feel like if I fell asleep I wasn't going to wake up again. It happened all night and probably only got about an hour's worth of real sleep. After my classes I came back to my dorm and tried to sleep again...same reaction. I haven't been able to sleep because whenever I feel like I'm losing consciousness I panic and jerk awake, almost like I'm afraid I'll have a heart attack in my sleep. For the past few days I've even had pain in the left side of my head as well as sharp pains in the inner ear. I thought I had an ear infection, but a trip to the nurse says I'm just fine and doesn't know why I'm having pain. Is this suddenly not being able to sleep a bout of anxiety/panic? Do symptoms occur weeks after coming off meds and should I go back on them? I'm tired and want to sleep, but I'm scared to death of not waking up :(

That is how my anxiety started, I would be jolted awake out of my sleep and my heart would race a million miles an hour. I am pretty new to the forum and to medication so I am not sure about effects weeks after stopping meds.
