I have taken celexa for two days and that will be it! I feel horrible, but it may work for you, it seems to help alot of people, but i can't believe that i will feel any better, i cannot function with the side effects. I was told it was similiar to lexapro.
I was on Lexapro for about two weeks... It was way too stimulating for me. It actually caused panic attacks because of how stimulating it was. I wasn't sleeping, wasn't eating. Made me feel like I was really high - and I was only taking half a dose - 5mg.
Unfortunately, the SSRIs are hard to gauge. What works for one person won't work for another. If you don't have luck with Lexapro, Celexa which is a very closely related drug (Lexapro is the only active stereo isomer of Celexa) and a lot of people find it to work for them if Lexapro didn't. I had a bad experience with Paxil and Lexapro and decided to leave the SSRIs alone but they do work for many people and my doctor was not pleased at my unwillingness to try Celexa.
I was on Lexapro for six months and then came off. My panic attacks returned so I returned to the Lexapro for a year and then came off again. My reasons for coming off were my own not wanting to be on a permanent drug that I may not need anymore. I am very sensitive to medicine. Usually the lowest effect dose offered is 10mg. I would cut it in half for 5 and that was all I needed. Within a few hours of missing a dose I would begin to have side effects, so these were my reasons for stopping it. But now for the benefits!
Within the first week on the lexapro I felt immensely better. A few panic attacks would come and go but they became few and far between as I kept on the medicine. While on the medicine I learned how better to control my emotions and anxiety and deal with it when it happened. I guess my best answer is yes! It did help alot, but as with all anxiety medicines it may not be for you and it is trial and error to find what works best.
A friend of mine takes Lexapro and loves it. She does have to use Xanax every now and then with it when anxiety/panic attacks arise more full blown. I have been on Effexor XR for 6 years for panic attacks, and love it. I too...went through a depression period after my first panic attack and the effexor completely brought me back. I recently went through a small depression pd. in April because I tried to wean off my medicine (under Dr. supervision) and I relapsed...started the meds back up and within a few weeks was good to go. I think that if you don't start noticing an improvement within 6 wks. on the medicine, it may not be for you. Keep trying!
