Heart rate

by Jon10, Nov 13, 2007 06:20PM
Hi all, hope everyone is doing well

I just wanted to ask you all about heart rate. Now, when i exercise, play football or do any other activity my heart rate obviously increases but I notice that it can stay in the 90s for a few hours after exercise. I have serious heart anxiety and have had a holter test with the all clear but i read somewhere that if your heart does not drop atleast 12 beats a minute after exercise this means you have an unhealthy heart. I wouldnt say im the fittest person on the planet but i fairly fit, I can run around for an hour no problem but the problems seem to come after. If my heart rate being in the 90s a few hours after exercise is normal then someone please tell me because im worried that im not dropping those 12 beats a minute.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

I have the same thing. My thoughts are a) I think that 12 beats a minute thing is for the first minute or maybe the first five minutes b) even if it is not fantastic that you don't go back to your resting heart rate it is better that you are fit than not fit c) what's to say it isn't anxiety that is keeping your rate higher and d) I did read an answer on the heart rate forum (from an actual real life doctor) that said it was normal for your heart rate to be a bit higher after exercise.
I am trying not to test my heart rate at all as it will just worry me although I can't help but notice my resting heart rate is dropping as I get fitter. Then I worry that it is too low. Can't win. And it is certainly much higher after excercise for a few hours.

I've been doing a lot of exercise over the past couple of months and my resting heart rate has dropped down to around 60 most of the time and i attribute this to the exercise.  I don't know anything about the dropping 12 beats after exercise part, but your heart rate will drop according to how fit you are. The first few weeks i was really getting out of breath and my heat rate was'nt dropping much, but as i got fitter it did. Due to my health anxiety though i'm still thinking i'm going to have a heart attack, which is stupid i know, but i can't help it.
