How fast does your HR get when having a panic attack?

The title says it all.  I am still scared at the heart rates that I have when having a full out panic attack.  I had two last week that were 186 and 165.  I have worn a holtor monitor for 48 hrs and just had a stress test that got my heart rate up to 180 and they said all was fine but I still cant cope with those rates when not doing anything strenuous.  How high do your heart rates get and how long to they last?  How are you calming yourself or stopping them?  I need somemore tools to deal with this.  I have been dealing with this for 5 years and was just released from a group therapy program for this and am on prozac.  I still cant get this feeling of worrying about my heart out of my head.

as to the comment that anxiety attacks cant hurt you I have to disagree.  Ive suffered from GAD for years and its only getting worse even with medication. my heart rates are getting so high now and stress that causes them that I have fainting spells and have had one seizure.  If not checked and treated properly they can cause issues down the road.  memory issues, heart attacks, high blood pressure, PTSD and many others.  mine went undiagnosed for years. I had to white knuckle them and it only made it worse. I felt hopeless and even made an attempt on my life to make it stop because I felt it was hopeless seeking another doctor.  Of course then they took me seriously but thats simply pathetic if you ask me. Its what happens when every doctor nowadays thinks your seeking drugs. Its absolutely pathetic. Now I have to make sure im lying down because I will pass out and the next time I wake up with a cop and ems in my kitchen Im not going to be very happy. My blood pressure when I got to ER was 160/95.  and its been higher then that before. Stress kills more people than any overdose of drugs. cigarettes, car accidents, etc etc unless they are stress related of course. Just saying from experience.  The immediate attack wont kill u unless u have a bad heart or high bp already.  They have bad long term affects on the body that can be life threatening down the road.

Hi there - I just quickly read your note on your fast heart rate (that's on up there)  and the holter monitor results.  Here's my suggestion.  I don't know your history on the panic disorder or the Rx for Prozac, but if you were NOT having these panic attacks this severe prior to the initiation of Prozac,  has your psych doc ever suggested possibly weaning you OFF the Prozac and trying something else?  I'm not familiar with your history but wanted to let you know that Prozac can aggravate the **** out of a panic disorder and make things a lot worse as far as "anxiety".  So sorry you are dealing with this.  There are beta blockers, too  (such as Toprol or Propanolol  / Inderal)  that are sometimes (in fact frequently) prescribed for panic disorders.  They help keep the heart rate DOWN .  I was prescribed low dose Inderal years ago for complaints of anxiety and fast heart rate.   It works wonders for me, and I've heard many say it also works wonders for them.  Ask your doc.  Hope things get better for you.

My heart rate would go up into the 120's when I would have attacks and it would scare the hell outta me. I really thought something was very wrong which would only make things worse. I then realized that it's actually all in my head. When you constantly think about your heart, and it racing or you having another attack then it's going to happen. I kept doing that to myself and would notice just by thinking it would trigger the heart to race. You just need to relax. Try really hard not to think of it. Tell yourself that you are fine, and if in the least bit you feel an attack or heart race coming on just play it off like it's nothing and go for a walk, read a book, watch tv..etc. Don't at all stop and think that it's going to get worse, or that it's still racing. It'll go back to normal within 10-15 minutes once you've not made a big deal of it.

I use to go through the same thing and well for the past few months I've learned how to not think of it and let me tell you..it's made a huge difference. The mind does crazy things!!

Also, do you excercise? If not then I really suggest you do. Does this happen to you everyday? Or just like once a month or so? What's your normal resting heart rate on average? It's well known that if you just walk or jog for 30 minutes everyday that because your heart is pumping so much during that time that during the rest of the day your bpm will go way down to a comfortable stage.

Does your heart just suddenly take off like when you bend over or move erratic and then slow down as quick as it started?  If it does you could have SVT, which is not life threatening yet very uncomfortable.  This can be hard to catch on an EKG.  I have this and for a long time I think people thought I was joking until I finally caught it on the EKG at doctors.  Good luck with it, these things are frustrating

Everyone's heart rate goes off the walls when your having a panic attack, its completely normal for your heart rate to be extreamly high during a panic attack, you should not be worried because a panic attack will not harm you, its just anxiety, and remember anxiety does not lead to anything worse. You have to learn how to conrtoll your panic attacks when you first start to feel them come on, when you feel it comming just realize its just anxiety and nothing is going to harm you while this is happening.

Hope this helps and realize its not hurting you at all, if your thinking your heart will explode or you might have a heart attack your 100% not, anxiety feeds on fear.

When i had bad panic attacks i used to spray some rescue remedie in my mouth and it would help relax me.

take it easy
