Hyperthyroid anxiety

Hi,
I posted in the thyroid section, and thought I would post here too.  I've been diagnosed hyperthyroid recently, and my anxiety is working overdrive 24\7, it's so bad at times, I won't sleep for 24-32 hours, I have chronic tinnitus, actually every symptom in the anxiety manual.

I feel as if I drink several cases of soda daily or 10 gallons of coffee, it's virtually impossible to relax, the only way I fall asleep is after being completely exhausted from anxiety.

Has anyone had positive experiences with anti-depressents ??

I went through Klonopin withdrawal he!!  and terrified of Benzo meds.

But my thyroid anxiety is so bad,  I am not getting any relief at all, it's been persistent for 2 weeks straight, non stop 24/7,.  This is the worst anxiety, I have ever felt in my life, thanks to my unbalanced thyroid.

The best way to describe how I feel non-stop is, I'm skydiving with out a parachute !

Are there any anxiety meds, I can take without stopping and having chronic withdrawals ??  No benzo suggestions, please.

Thanks for any input.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.  Sorry to read, you still suffer from anxiety.  Seems no matter what we do at times, it just doesn't want to go away !!  But that's wonderful news Prozac has helped you through anxiety.

I had very bad experience, when prescribed Klonopin.  I don't blame the med, I blame the idiot doctor that prescribed it to me, with no knowledge of the medication at all.  I ended up in the ER, going through convulsions, after I cold turkey, then had to get online, and learn to taper myself off ....   Long story.  My doctor, was very rude, uncaring and a complete &&^^%%$$$ !!!!

But because of my doctor, I'm terrified of taking any anti anxiety meds, and was hoping to read experiences from others, that had expreienced positive results from the anti anxiety meds, and treatment from thier doctor.

Well good luck to you ! Thanks !

I had hyperthyroidism and had a partial thyroidectomy to remove the toxic nodule.  I still suffer from anxiety; it just never went away after the surgery.  I'm now on Prozac (generic) and it has helped tremendously.  If your endo won't prescribe something, see if your PCP will.

Good Luck!

Hi,
Thanks for reply.  Your absolutely correct !  It's just that thyroid conditions can a long time to stabilize, and I've read that people use anti-depressant, while working through thyroid treatments.

The anxiety, I have been dealing with, doesn't come and go, it's permanent, unitl my thyroid is under control, which could be anytime in the future.

But I'll try to grin & bear it, till I see the Endo next week.

Thanks & Good luck !!

if you have a thyroid problem thats causing ur anxiety why would u think about taking AD's  or benzos? the chemical imbalance isnt in ur brain its in ur thyroid..Offcourse the signals that are making your thyroid hyper are coming from the hypothalemus but you can have surgery on that, but you can have surgery on the thyroid and take a piece out.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.  I know medications do work for most people, but unfortunately for me, I'm sensitive to medications, even aspirin.  I've had an allergic reaction to 10-15 various meds.  My allergist wanted to do a test to figure out why ?  My system rejects medications.

The only medication that helped me tremendously in the past was Nortriptyline, but had to stop, the med was causing long qt.

I'm sure there are anxiety meds, out there not harmful, but helpful.  But most are too afraid to share, due to negative feedback.

I've had negative experiences on Klonopin, maybe I tapered to fast, with no help from my doctor at all, but the med has done wonders for others.

The psychiatrist was no help at all, cause my anxiety is caused by my thyroid.

I'm open to all suggestions, positive or negative, we are all here to share experiences at the forum.

Good luck to you & thanks !!

There are many AD's out there that are used to treat depression and anxiety.  I am a big proponent of medications like Zoloft, Prozac, etc (SSRIs). They are usually the first line of meds prescribed.  I have had a good experience with SSRIs but each drug will affect people in different ways.  The only problems I had with it was initially, I was very worried to even try it because of all the horror stories I had heard, and for the first couple of weeks it actually made me feel a little more on edge as my body adjusted.  Remember they can take around a month or so to actually 'kick in.'  I think the most important thing to do though is to go get counseling from a therapist if one is available to you.  I know many people do not have insurance or access to a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, etc, but learning about it is the best way to confront it in my opinion.

As far as withdrawals...I had a headache and a little nausea so I worked with my doctor on a slower taper and it helped tremendously...keep us posted!
