I'm not sure...

by elitekid, Jan 27, 2009 08:55AM
Hey guys

I'm not sure whats wrong with me but I figure it could be something to do with anxiety.

Whenever I'm faced with a social event I feel worried that I won't be able to be social and because of this I go to any social event finding it hard to start conversations with people. I feel that I'm awkward around people. I'm completely fine when I'm socializing with my friends because I feel like I can talk through them to other people. I don't have a job at the moment due to the fact I can't be bothered meeting and greeting new people, it seems like such a hassle getting to know people.

Any ideas?

Social anxiety is a pretty common form of anxiety in my opinion.  If you read many of the posts here you will probably see many similarities in your experience with this.  Have you always been shy/nervous in big groups of people?  Have you suffered from anxiety in the past?  Anxiety can be a real big pain in the you know what, but it is VERY 'treatable' with understanding and the willingness to confront it even thought it can be very confusing and scary; especially in the beginning....welcome to the community and I encourage you to use this forum and continue to express your experiences and your questions!

Definately sounds like social anxiety disorder.  Nothing to be ashamed about.  It sounds like it is stopping you from LIVING your life, and that's not good.   Talk to your doctor about it.  I have a friend who was the exact same way, and his doctor put him on lexapro. Needless to say, he now has a job that requires him to do presentations infront of people...scared at first, but now he is a PRO and has no fears when it comes to talking to people.  So, there is help out there.  Don't let this ruin your life!  Go talk to your dr.. and keep us posted. :)
Good Luck!
