Is It Safe???

I've been seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor for almost 2 years now and I feel like I've made some good progress. My doctor has worked really hard to find the best medications that help with my severe depression and anxiety and my counselor has helped me with therapy to help me work through my anxiety and also my temper. I currently am using Zoloft to treat my depression and anxiety and Wellbutrin to help to counter some of the side effects of the SSRI. I also take Calonopin for anxiety. My question is regarding the Calonopin and if it's safe for long term use. I seem to really do a lot better in many social situations and feel better with the Calonopin but, I don't know if it's safe for long term use. When I feel my anxiety levels start to creep up on me I take them and they help a lot but, if I stop taking them will I suffer from withdrawals? My doctor only gives me a one month supply of 1mg pills and I usually have a few left over at the end of the month. Are they addictive? Are they safe?

Thank You so much for all of the responses! I really do have a great team that has helped me a lot and I trust both of them a great deal. I'll keep monitoring my medication and how I'm feeling mentally so that I notice if I'm having any problems. One thing I've noticed, if i take the Klonopin for a few days and then don't use them I do notice a difference. That's why I try to take them only as needed. Thanks again for all of the responses and I'll keep everyone posted.

I agree, it sounds like you have found what works best for you and that's what matters most.  I take Celexa along with Klonopin and have for several years with no issues and no increases in dosages.  It also sounds like you have a great psychiatrist and therapist, I would trust in them.  Congratulations on doing both and working to get to a better place in your life. Try not to worry so much about "what if" and enjoy your life.  Best wishes and take care!

I was also on klonopin for over a year....it is a benzo with a long half life and is prescribed much more long term then the other benzos.  I also found that it was much easier to come off of than some the other benzos I have used, but I consulted my doctor and came off of it very slowly.

I believe you are doing the right thing in dealing with your anxiety.  You are on meds while you are going through counseling to gain long term relief from your anxiety.  I take this approach and many studies show that it can be a very effective combination (counseling and medication).  Of course there are benefits and risks with anything we put into our bodies, but it sounds to me like you are involved in your treatment and that it is working quite well for you...keep us posted!

Do you mean Klonopin(clonazapam) ? If so I have been on it for 3 years along with Paxil. I was also on ativan but I got off it and am just going to take the Klonopin and Paxil long term. My doctors have told me that they dont like to use benzos for long term use as you can develop a tolerance and have to keep up'ing the dose but in some cases it is the best option for people. I have had no issues with tolerance at all.
