Is this ocd or not?

by regnevar, Nov 08, 2009 07:28AM
I was wonder if the following thoughts are OCD and if they are not what are they.  My own mind becomes the enemy.  When I become aware of something I do not want to become aware of then all that I become aware of is the annoying thought.  Examples are eye blinking and swallowing.  I become aware each time I swallow or blink my eyes and no matter how much I try not to become aware I can't avoid being aware when I swallow and blink my eyes.  This fear comes and goes but the swallowing aspects seems like I am forever aware to some degree.  Other thoughts are all of a sudden I might not be able to laugh or sneeze.  I get a fear that I can't and then I don't.  I don't seem to have any compulsions or reactions to these thoughts like having to wash my hands, clean the house etc.  Please respond because I feel alone here.  I feel not quite ocd but yet I definitely have something.

While your symptoms have a certain aspect of OCD to them, in MY humble opinion, I don't think that is what's going on here. And I'm not sure what is..............I personally have no experience with OCD, so hopefully those who deal with this condition will respond and give you better advice.
This COULD be the start of this condition, but again, I really don't know. You have become totally focused on a few symptoms that aren't, apparently, "normal" for you. My feeling is that there is more of an "anxiety" feel to this than OCD, but only a doctor can determine for sure what is going on.
My advice, kinda crappy as it is, would be to try your very hardest to stop focusing on these things and see if you can get past it without any help. If you are going through a stressful time right now, it'spossibly related to that. But if you can't get this under control, then I think a visit to your doc is called for. Even if the dx IS OCD, there are some very good medications out there to help you control this behavior. But let's cross that bridge when and if we get to it.
I'll turn this over to the folks who have way more knowledge of this conditon than I do now and I hope you get some peace of mind.

Hi I have anxiety and started on Celexa about 5 or so weeks ago.  It is helping.  I have been in therapy since January and finally decided I needed the meds.  What the therapist said to me is I don't have OCD but I have some tendencies toward it.  I do get obsessive thoughts about things.  Mostly about germs on my hands.  I do wash alot but not to the extream of people that do have full blown OCD.  I use alot of hand sanitizer.  So I am working on that.  I try distraction.  If you are thinking about swallowing over and over try to go to another place.  Find your most relaxing place and I tap my fingers together and take myself there and only there.  I hope this helps but therapy will teach you how to deal with all of this.  Good luck.
