Klonopin and Zantac

by Casey80, Oct 22, 2007 12:51PM
Hi -

Ryan, or someone, could you tell me if taking zantac 150x2 daily would increase the sedative effect of klonopin? Thanks.

Zantac is a Histamine II receptor antagonist that inhibits Cytochrome P-450, the major liver enzyme. Since Klonopin is metabolized by the liver, the inhibition of Cytochrome P-450 will increase the plasma concentration of Klonopin.

The two are absolutely contraindicated. Same for Tagament and other H II blockers.

I would suggest a Proton Pump Inhibitor instead. Prevacid, Protonix, Prilosec, or Nexium. You can speak with your doctor about these options.

Thanks Ryan. Can I just stop taking the Zantac altogether, or do I have to taper? I hear about acid rebound and the like. I have been on the zantac for about 3 weeks.
