It could. According to the USDA, 61% of the U.S.population is magnesium deficient. I would imagine it would be similar in countries that have similar diets.

I take a product called natural calm. It works for me, but don't take too much or you will get diahrrea and potentially deplete yourself even more. It's probably good to take a calcium supplement along with it. I would recommend taking a good multivitamin with it (not all multivitamins are equal) and fish oil (it's important to get a good brand of fish oil too). I have recently found out that I am vitamin deficient in general, and since taking the multivitamin and fish oil, I feel so much better.

Get your supplements from a health food store. The **** they sell at a chain pharmacies is not good, and you will probably see little to no benefit from their products. Avoid products such as one-a-day as they are just synthetically produced vitamins that aren't easily absorbed by your body. Vitamins made from raw fruits and vegetables are absorbed best. Good supplements are expensive. These supplements could easily cost you $100 or more, but remember, you are worth it.

What you want to do is take a 1:1 magnesium to calcium citrate ratio vitamin, or if that isn't enough magnesium, a 2:1.  Solaray makes a good one.  Bluebonnet makes a good one.  The reason for this is that you don't want to leach the calcium out of your body, which is what taking a lot of magnesium on its own will do; that will weaken your bones.  kday gave very good suggestions for you.  However, whether the magnesium is responsible for your anxiety or depression, who knows?  Probably by itself, it won't solve your problem, but without it, you can't solve that problem, either.  Magnesium is more associated with anxiety than depression; there are a host of natural remedies for anxiety and depression, which can be studied further in book by Hyla Cass called Natural Highs; she's a professor at UCLA who uses natural remedies in her psychiatric practice.
