Medication and Pregnancy

by SarahB79, Jul 16, 2008 10:55AM
I take Lexapro for depression and anxiety.  It has really helped me tremendously.  I am also diabetic and take Janumet.  I would like to become pregnant soon and was wondering if anyone had experience with Lexapro while pregnant/breastfeeding.  Do you know if it's approved or known safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Namaste,

SSRI antidepressants(such as Lexapro) may cause serious or life-threatening lung problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, or if you become pregnant while taking Lexapro, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your doctor.

basiclly once you are pregnant they will take you off the meds, at least the lexapro, there are no really safe drugs to atke while your pregnant, the only safe one im on is hydroxyzine and its to help sedate me so i dont have such bad panic, but they took me off the prozac and with my son took me off the paxil. im 30 weeks pregnant and still on klonopin, because im a special case, but even that is really bad to be on when pregnant.
i would suggest keep trying to get pregnant but realize that when you do youll have 9 long unmedicated months and prepare yourself because there are some really hard days without medication! its worth it, long as your boyfriend/husband is willing to be extra supportive and you ahve friends or family that understand the situation and can help!

Hi Sarah.  I have two beautiful children and 1 on the way.  I have taken Prozac at my ob's advice throughout both pregnancys and this one as well.  In my case, which was anxiety, my doctor said the benefit outweighed the risk.  I have two healthy children, and remained mentally healthy throughout both pregnancys.  Ask your doc, they are very aware of what can happen to women under severe mental duress and stress.  Just a little note to let you know there is a light at the end of the tunnell!!  Even for pregnant women!!\
