Migraines and Mood Swings?

Migraines and Mood Swings?

Is it common to develop migraines from anxiety? I've noticed more and more recently that when I am extremely stressed or tense, I tend to develop intense migraines and horrible mood swings. Everyone I know tries to categorize it as PMS or PMDD, but I know that's not what it is because most of the time I'm not anywhere near that time of the month and there are some months where I don't experience these symptoms at all (yet I still experience cramps, bloating etc.) Regular migraine medicine doesn't seem to work when I get these headaches either.

Also, are there any suggestions on how to alleviate these without taking medicine? (since they don't work)

First, if the medication isn't working, they might not be technically migraines.  That's one specific type of headache, and the medications for it are specific to only that type of headache.  If they're tension headaches, migraine medication won't work.  Migraines are a vascular headache that are caused by constriction of the blood vessels during stress, and usually occur right after the stress when the blood vessels open up again the all the blood rushes to the head.  The way to control it without medication is to learn to keep the blood vessels from constricting even during stress, which can be achieved with biofeedback (you learn to warm the hands, and warming opens the vessels), or meditation (causes a relaxation of the body's physiology even if it doesn't solve the anxiety problem; it eliminated my migraines.  Since a doctor recommended TM to me over 30 years ago I've had three migraines despite intense anxiety), and there are also natural remedies for migraines -- the two best I've used are Migraine Relief by Ridgecrest Herbals and Migraide by, I think, Boiron.  And PMS can cause migraines in some people.  But you have to make sure it's actually a migraine and not some other type of headache.  One common symptom of migraines is blurred vision before the headache starts, for example, and nausea.  If you don't get that, it's probably a different type of headache.  Good luck.
