I used to have nightmares about tornadoes and was totally freaked out by them. Think it was from Wizard of oz, I don't know for sure. But I ended up majoring in meteorology and worked at the severe storms forecast center in Oklahoma...tornado alley. I have been on numerous tornado chases. Went from phobic to being completely fascinated by them. That is one of the main components of getting over a phobia...continued exposure to what you are phobic about. I'm evidence in my case, it worked. Worth a try.
What about... Doing something to take your mind off it like... Sewing, drawing I don't know
Have you thought about going to some counseling? or even CBT therapy.
