Neurology

Dr (Neurologist) prescribed   Amitriptilyne for painful Neuropathy in both feet, extreme sensitivity and a burning sensation. This is caused by disk problems in my back, as diagnosed after an MRI.
It seems that this med is for severe depression(I am not), mental problems and the like.I am nervous about taking it, worried about side effects.Understand from others it sometimes is used for pain, but then why is it not approved for this by the FDA.    And  why is this indication not written up when explaining the medication on the pharmacy form?

Help please  J. Irishsmile

Thanks for your  responses.Dr has decided to have me take  a muscle relaxant while doing therapy. He is holding off on other medications.I will check on the mentioned    amitriptyline alternatives that may have less side effects.

You can also ask the doc to consider neurontin or lyrica.  I've taken both for neuropathy pain.

I would ask your doctor about Lexapro or Cymbalta. These are two of the newer meds and not so many side effects. Good luck!

Neurologist are using amiltriptyline widely. It is the most common antidepressant prescribed by neurologist and especially if they are old.

What I recommend for you pain is to talk to your doctor about Cymbalta. It is newer than amiltriptyline with less-side effects. It is so new that some neurologist don't know about it. What is the catch? The high price.
