Prozac does it work what are the side effects???

I have anxiety/ panic disorder for the last 2 years and it is hell. As of yet i havnt taken any meds but i need a rest from this illness. I have came across the drug Prozac is it any good what are the side effect like??

My question is... is it any good and what are the sire effects??

Oh, I forgot to add, both imipramine before it stopped working and Paxil before I tapered off it because of side effects (which discontinuation, as regular readers know, killed me dead) helped with my anxiety attacks; I was never prescribed meds for depression.  And placebo effects are temporary.

Jake would be right with a pure antidepressant, such as wellbutrin, but ssris like Prozac aren't pure antidepressants.  Since they work on serotonin, which plays a role in both depression and anxiety, they can be effective for both or either anxiety and/or depression, or effective for neither, depending on the person.  After all, in double blind studies, none of these drugs work more than 30% of the time, but if you try enough of them, you might find one that does work.  Same with therapy, same statistics, though in truth most studies involve depression, they don't seem as interested in us anxiety sufferers.  If you were going to simply target depression and not anxiety, you'd just go after norepinephrine and skip the serotonin, but those drugs are usually very stimulating, like wellbutrin.  Same with tricyclics, actually.  So nobody knows what will happen to anyone who takes these meds beforehand; probabilities mean nothing to any particular individual or any individual roll of the dice.

Read them a little better and you will see "it is THOUGHT" a awful lot, what you wont see is "It is proven".

From the science journals, taking physc. classes for 4 years, and some other stuff, generally A.D's do not work so good for "Pure anxiety" without the depression, this is because people with Pure anxiety states need something to dull there senses because they are over stimulated because there brain, and or adrenal function are kicking out way to much "Mood hormones". And, actually you couldnt be farther from the truth on the fact of anti depressants. Anti Depressants STIMULATE thats a fact, now..when you go put out a fire...do you throw water on it? or do you through gas on it?

Essentialy, giving a person with a pure anxiety state anti depressants is like "Throwing gas on a fire to put it out"
Benzos work great for this because they do the opposite of what anti depressants do "and then some, but we'll stay away from the topic"

There is a common misconception on Anti depressants....even Regular Docs get a little twisted on the facts...

But like I stated in my previous post, everyones different, and there is always those out there that might respond in a possitive way with a pure anxiety state on A.D's.
Let us also not forget about the "Placebo effect"

I love porzac and 20mgs worked very well for me.  The first two my depression was worse but I stuck it out and the depression actually got a lot better.  Though I couldn't have an orgasm AT ALL.  I could get allworked up but ya know, nothing else.  I'm weaning off the prozac now and taking wellbutrin.

Antidepressants will make your anxiety worse too.

Actually, the opposite is true.  Apparently, the same parts of the brain are affected by both depression and anxiety and this is why antidepressants (especially SSRI's) are very effective for anxiety.  Hope this helps ....

Blurred Vision, Stomach Ache, Chest Pain, Mild Hypertension, Euphoria "wierd..kinda awsome warm feeling..went away after a week"
It also made my anxiety worse, if you have a pure anxiety disorder "Anxiety disorder without any depression" then chances are, Antidepressants will make your anxiety worse too.

Drugs effect everyone different, they may make you better right now....but look into the future, because they could make you worse.
Try any...and all natural cures first, fixing the balance within you body is the key to the cure.

My stomach aches went away after a couple days. Mine weren't as bad. The first day was the worst.

I started it a week ago and got really bad stomache ache and heart burn!, along with diarea?? so it really affected my stomache I did not take it today and I dont have the bad stomache burn and pain.. still feels yucky but better so I dont know what to do???


does anyone know will the stomache issues go away, if I keep taking it or will it just be a side effect my body does continuiouslly??? i dont want to take it if it will continue! I cant stand thefood reflux it does either! though i must say it does not make me head feel weird like lexapro? but the stomache is bad in me! im sure everyone os different...

I would give it a try and see how you do .. my stomache thing started the first night on it and just got worse with each day? so give it a try! good luck !!!

Compared to the other ssris, it probably has fewer side effects, but since these effects are all individual, you won't be able to predict them based on other's experiences.  Prozac does appear to be the easiest to stop taking and seems to cause the least weight gain, so those are positives.  It's the best to start with to see if it works.

I like prozac. Its not helpful for everyone. Took a while to start working. I got stomach ache for a couple days. Thats it! I like it!
