Question about psychiatrists

Hi, I went to the doctor the other day and got diagnosed with anxiety. I was so uncomfortable and hard, but worth it! The only psychiatrists I could find, all worked in hospitals, and before seeing them you had to go through a "assessment". My question is, should I see a psychiatrist that works in the hospital or find someone who works from his/her office? (don't doctors who work in hospitals deal with more severe stuff?)

Also what is a psychiatric assessment?

Thanks a lot!

Therapy should be the first choice, since if it works you won't need medication.  But only you can decide how bad the problem is and whether you can wait for therapy to help.  It can take a long time and still not help at all, you just never know.  But if you can avoid medication in any situation, it's a more cautious approach.  On the other hand, psychiatrists don't do therapy much anymore, and when they do it's very expensive.  So if you want therapy, a psychologist is what you want.  Those who do take medication still need therapy, it doesn't obviate the need for it.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I'll call the hospital Monday and ask how I can schedule an appointment. Feeling kinda scared right now! Hospitals never were my favorite place to be, and now being there to see a psychiatrist, is making it worst!

Also, if anyone knows, how do they treat social anxiety in Canada? Is it more commonly to be treated with therapy + medication or therapy alone?

A psychiatric assessment is only to get a handle on your condition. Lots of questions. No harm in it at all. Nothing to fear from it. To me, a shrink is a shrink. Be they working in a hospital or solo. They will ask the same questions and do the same things. OK, so you can go private if you have the cash. If so you will get treated better. Same service only with silver spoons. In a hospital there is always the chance you might get a rookie. Learning the trade. Don't be afraid to ask.

I have not been to a psychiatrist myself, but, I have heard they have really been of some help to folks. I was not aware that they only worked in hospitals, I know the ones around this area have offices but, they also work in hospitals. As with anything, there are both good and bad ones, so, be careful. If you can see if you can find out a little about the one you are planning on seeing.

In regards to assessment, well, I would say it would probably be like a questionnaire based on your symptoms, I am only guessing, but I would think this would sort of guide them as to treating you.

I wish I could be of more help. I have anxiety too, it is  no fun. One thing that helps me is reading these books by Claire Weekes, they are written in very understandable language, it is like she is sitting next to you talking, one is called "hope and help for your nerves" and the other is called "peace from nervous suffering" I highly recommend them, they have been the best help to me over any doctor.
