Resting heart rate of 46

Ive got a big concern, greatly appreciated for any review or comment..my question is my pulse dropped to 46 last night resting pulse and was low 50's all night long should I be worried? I'm 22 male I play basketball on Tuesdays and go to the gym and walk jog tread meal 3o mins a day and 10 mins on the bike at the gym and lift lightly occasionally as well...and I really have no bad symptoms other than freakibg out a lil cause it feels like its beating too slow?? Advice please? Seen Doc today he said with no symptoms and how young I am "22 now" they don't do anything. Worried some about it...with my high blood pressure too it runs about 160/85 I different meds today currently on hydrochloric thiazides 25mg one a day, now also amlodipine 5mg will start tomorrow. I've had EKG abnormal(thickness of heart) but said it wasn't bad I've had stress test it was normal I've had heart echo it was normal also blood work and chest X-ray all normal..need advice soo much thanks!

Ok will do. Do u think my doc will switch my Bp meds after just a few days? I seen a new national study on amlodipine said it gives u an increased risk of heart attack or stroke and a chance for bad chest pain (agina) and should only be prescribed after others are tried..and I've only tried hydrochloric thiazides...

Yes, it does sound like you have sinus problems going on. Did your Dr do a nose swab to see if there was indeed an infection? If you can, it might be a good idea to see an ENT, ear, nose, throat specialist. Make sure to tell the Dr you have high BP and also let him/her know what meds you're on. There are several allergy and sinus meds you can't take if you high BP.

Thanks remar, I'm hoping to get this under control soon I'm hoping this will help cause its very high.. are you knowledgeable on sinuses? I've had pressure above my nose for over a month now and a weird feeling in the back of my head (spaced out/dizzy kinda feeling) its stronger sometimes then others but is constantly around I recently had a brain/head ct scan and they said all was normal...when I play basketball my right ear will stop up an in stop its really annoying doc said my nasal was swollen but nothing about my ears...so I know its not wax. I took antibiotics for 2 weeks + and used a nasal spray with a steroid in it called Flonase....(sometimes temporary nasal relief with Flonase but it comes right back...any suggestions I've tryed hot showers, drinking plenty of water..the pressure has let up some on my nose but hasn't improved anymore same with my head.

I just researched the new med and your Dr did prescribed the starting dose of 5 mgs. He may have to adjust the dose so don't be worried or surprised if this happens.
I do think some of your symptoms could be anxiety related. I don't have high BP but I do have anxiety and I get these symptoms sometimes. I really think once you get your BP under control you will stop having anxiety. It's what you're really worried about right now and that could be causing your anxiety.

Like I mentioned before, it really is good that this was caught so early. The sooner the better. You should be just fine because you're still so young. I'm glad to hear you have a BP monitor. Take it with you to your Dr to compare numbers. When I bought one that's what I did and my numbers matched up with my Drs numbers. So, I know my machine is good and works just fine. I'm going to check on the second med you were prescribed. Your Dr may have started you on a low dose to see how you do on it.

Thanks remar, the meds I'm taking is hydrochloric thiazides 25mg(for a month now no affect) so he added amlodipine 5mg(just started today) to go with it. I'm hoping I can get it down soon, does anyone know how long I have before it does something tragic or does something perminatly wrong to my body? Cause so far the first meds did not work, I only took half of my amlodipine today to see if I'd have any strong  side affects, but will take the whole 5mg tomorrow. I currently have a Bp monitor at the house just bought it today that's how I got those readings. I'm not scheduled to see the doc till 1st of may, I'm hoping I can get this down cause it seems to run awful high I'm worried its gonna do something tragic cause I just feel weird since its been running this high I get muscle twitches, weird feeling in head like light headed and dizzy, pressure above nose.... But may be anxiety related idk I try not to worry but am very concerned.

High BP can definitely be hereditary, just like Nursegirl said. No matter how you eat and what kind of exercise you get it must be controlled with meds. Your sister is very young and she has it. What's the name of the med your Dr put you on? Make sure to check your BP a couple of times a day to see how it's doing. You can get a machine at Walmart or any pharmacy.  Try not to worry. It's really a good thing this was caught when you are so young so you can get it under control right now.

My half sister is on Bp meds an she's just 26, we have the same mom diff dads. My dad is black I don't know him so he could of ha high Bp too possibly. I took it after going to walmarts 176/93 didn't wait anytime. Then I took it again 5 mins later 153/86 then a few mins later after resting it wa 146/84....still high I know but I'm on meds just started the 2nd one today.... Seems like my body's so stressed and i get anxious easy...and also there's a big jump in Bp after walkin or going from sitting to standing. But if I check it in the morning after I wake its close to normal...any help? I'm young idk why my body's like this I played bball for almost 4 hours today and only ate oatmeal and grilled chicken sandwich..also drank plenty of water...is it something other than high Bp cause it to raise really high if not resting?

Well, if it is hereditary (and that sure sounds like the case at your age), there's not a lot YOU can do to fix it...most likely you will need to manage it with meds.

Certainly making sure you are not overweight and the healthier your lifestyle will help keep it from going even higher, but getting rid of a genetic HBP completely (without meds) is not real likely.

Does anyone in your family actually HAVE HBP that you know of?  It would be more prevalent in your african american family members than the caucasian ones most likely.  If you're not sure, ask around.  You may discover info that your doctor would find useful.

Definitely keep working with your doctor.  Keep us updated, hope the amlodipine helps!

Thank you all, Yes remar when i seen the doc he said 160/100 ....it jumps all over the place but mostly high readings...when i first wake up its almost normal, 130-140 60-70's ....and nursegirl It's been high(hypertension) for a couple months that I know of forsure its just been high ever since. I'm thinking its hereditary cause I eat right an I'm active. I'm not very athletic, but decently athletic body. I'm 22yrs old I'm mixed Caucasian and African American I'm  6,2 230 but I do go to the gym few days a week and play basketball half court a time or two a week. I started new meds today to go with the hydrochloric thiazides..there called amlodipine 5mg because after a month with hydrochloric thiazides it didn't bring it down any I hope these work. Any other advice on the Bp? I mean in just turned 22 I'm active I don't know what to do I don't wanna be on pills the rest of my life with side affects this early :(......

Normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100. Like I said, athletic people can have lower heart rates.

Exactly.

Sounds like it's perfectly normal for you...especially because your doc has checked you out and isn't concerned.  Most very athletic people will have much lower resting heart rates than the rest of us slobs....errr, I mean, inactive people.  ;0)

I wouldn't give it a whole lot of thought, especially if you're not having any kind of bothersome symptoms.  How long have you had high blood pressure?  That's kind of unusual at your age...have they determined why it is a little high?  How long have you been on the hydrochlorothiazide?

Also, like remar said, anxiety will absolutely make both go up, so if you were especially anxious while your BP was being taken, that would account for some of it.

Your heart rate was low before you even started the water pill? Normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100. Like I said, athletic people can have lower heart rates. My daughter is very athletic and hers runs low. Normal for her. But, your blood pressure should be much lower too. Is this what it is when you see the Dr? 160/85.Do you have a problem with anxiety? This can make your BP and HR go up and down.

It's most likely the meds making your heart rate so low. Also, many people that are young and athletic have low heart rates. We have a Heart forum and also a General health forum here if you would also like to post your questions there.
