A little more information is needed for us to give you our best opinion, fadada.
Why has it been prescribed for you? What dose? For how long? What are your symptoms? Was this given to you by a PCP or a P-doc? Why are you scared to take it?
If you address some of these questions, we'll know where to begin helping you. But even after we give you our opinions, we CANNOT tell you whether or not you should take it. That would be a decision only you and your doctor can make.

Please post again.

In SOME ways, you are right to be afraid of Xanax. This med should NEVER be taken for longer than four months on a REGULAR (daily) basis. But your doctor has prescribed this PRN (AS NEEDED) On a prn basis, you can safely take Xanax for years.
While it's ALWAYS a good idea to understand the meds we take, those patient information inserts will scare the hell out of anyone! Bear in mind, to cover their butts, pharmaceutical companies will put every single, possible, horrible thing that could happen to you in there.
We all react differently to medications, so there is no way I can predict what YOU will experience. Xanax is a fairly potent benzo, but it's my GUESS that the first time you take it, the worst you will feel is some sedation and perhaps a feeling of being light headed, possibly a little dizzy. These feelings are nothing to be afraid of. When you take Xanax, or any benzo on a regular basis, these feelings soon abate as your body becomes use to the drug. Taking this med on a prn basis may mean that you will experience these feelings each time you take it.
I would suggest that you try taking a dose when you are anxiety free and see how you feel. Waiting until you're having an anxiety attack to try it for the first time will only INCREASE your anxiety. If you know beforehand what to expect, your anxiety will DECREASE.
If you find that you are taking the Xanax more than once or possibly twice a WEEK, I would talk to your doctor about putting you on a LONG TERM benzo to PREVENT the panic attacks.
It's good to be cautious about medications, but you can be, at times, TOO cautious. I think this is one of those times as you've been suffering needlessly for a month now.
I would also suggest some therapy to get to the root cause of your anxiety and it's entirely possible that the therapy alone will be enough for you.......you may not need medication at all. Food for thought.
Please let us know how you're doing, OK?
Peace
