Seeing psychiatrist for first time with 'telemedicine.' Help?!

I have no idea how it even works.  In the past, I've brought lists and symptom monitoring charts to give the psychiatrist because my anxiety makes it difficult to talk to doctors.  I can't do that if I have to *see* the doctor through a computer screen (thats what I'm assuming telemedicine is)... how does he even prescribe medications if he can't physically write it down and hand the paper to me?

Someone who's seen a psychiatrist through telemedicine, whatever the heck it is, can you please share your experience and maybe help put me at ease about this.  My appointment is tomorrow morning, and I'm kind of freaking out.

I have some experience with this.  I'm a government RN that is also diagnosed with BP II, PTSD, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (lucky me).  At our facility, you go into a room, generally with a psych nurse present (sometimes not) and sit in front of a large screen tv and see the Psychiatrist while they are seeing you.  Most people say once you get used to the idea of it, you don't even notice it anymore.  The prescription issue is solved by the doctor sending the prescription to your pharmacy just like any other doctor would for antibiotics or anything else.  This is being used in a lot of rural areas as well as military applications and overseas patients unable to get mental health care with an "in person" doctor.

I have no experience with this.  However, in response to you question about writing an Rx.  He would most likely call it in to your pharmacy directly, rather than the old pen and paper method.  Therefore, be sure you have established where you want to fill any potential medications.
