Are these "stars" then followed by a headache? If so, I would suspect your experiencing migraine. And it's possible to have the "stars," or other visual aura and NOT have a headache. I get "occular" migraines and "see" a real light show out of my peripheral vision. I see stars and zig-zaggy, wavey, watery lines........all in living color. But I don't get the classic migraine headache. I DO get a headache, and it's a weird one, but not the "run away to a dark room and scream" kind.
Bright lights can trigger my "attacks," but even if that isn't the cause, I can't take bright lights, or loud noise or a lot of movement. I also lose my central vision, which means that if I look directly at something, such as a face, there is just a black hole there. It's quite unnerving. Especially if it happens while I'm driving!
I would talk to your doctor about this and he will probably send you to a neruo to rule out anything beside migraine. There are excellent meds out there that if taken at the first sign of the aura, it pretty much stops the migraine in it's tracks.
I've not heard that this symptom is common in anxiety/panic, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. You don't see an "MD" after my name.................
Let us know what you find out, OK?
Peace
