No nortriptyline is not a tetracyclic. It is a second generation tricyclic. It is the active metabolite of amiltriptyline. The result is less side-effects.

Hi there.Sorry to hear that trazodone no longer work for you. You should go to your doctor and say you need your meds changed ASAP. I was on Amitriptyline for over 12 years and in the end the Bridge Centre mental health centre took me off them as I was overdosing. I used towake up in the night and take another one to get back to sleep. That's what happened with Nick Drake the folk singer. he was on Lentizol as it was called before Amitriptyline. He woke up during the night and took an overdose and his mother found him slumped over his bed in the morning. Acidental Death. My doctor said last year that ALL anti depressents are the same, That's rubbish, they are all different. I was on Zispin oral, which i put on my tounge and was fairly good but then he took me off it and put me on Mirtazapine as he said , Exact words.' Mirtazapine is the same but cheaper to produce' . I noticed the diference in about a week or so, wnet back to see G.p and he refused to change them, so I've had depression for about two years. It goes for a while but comes back. I said I may be bi polar but after going back to the Bridge Centre they just got rid of me as they look after certain people and not others, including myself. So now my G.P. has just put me on Trazodone for my anxiety/depression. They may help me sleep for about a couple of weeks then they wont work. All the other meds I've been on have had the same effect. One thing I have noticed is that my Tinitus ahs suddenly gone but so far these plls havent kicked in and they only stay in the system for 9 hours max the next day. I havent noticed any side efffects so maybe I'll give them a go but my depression is because of my lifestyle. My ex wife passed away last year and then two other close mates died and I'm unemployed and not much chance of finding another job at 54 years of age. .I'm seeing my G.P. next thursday as he wants to see how I'm doing. Trazodone seems to pass through me like water. It has little effect apart from a few hours sleep. I slept better on Amitrptyline nut he refuses to put me back on them so I'll have to suffer in silence.I live on my own and that's tough enough. Hope you get something done with your meds but I think the body get used to the meds and doctors dont really like to change them as people get worse before they get better, if they do get better.I'm taking my 50 ml pill now then hopefully sleep in about an hour. Good Luck. Bernie 08
i am on trazadone (150mg) and have been for 15yrs , they worked perfectly for about 8yrs , but now my depression and anxiety is as bad as ever , so i asked thr doctor to change them and he says after 15yrs i am addicted to them so i cant come off them , i will always be on them , so now i sit and suffer in silence . thought i would tell you this before you get addicted to them
Hi . Thanks for mentioning nortripyline. Is it a Tetra- Cyclic?. I havent come across in the Wikepedia for Anti Depressents. So far Trazodone has had little effect but my TINITTIS has suddenly stopped which might mean that they could be starting to work for me.also I slept slightly longer last night. (6 hours). I find Trazodone an odd choice that my GP put me on. It's primary use is for sleep problems with anxiety and depression, I was on Paroxatine but because I've started getting really bad migraines so I was taken off it. and given Imigran for it.I get the visual side with the flasing lights with mirrors then other times I get the headache side which can last all day form when I get up till I go to bed.I think Amytriptylinre is the most widely prescribed and it prevents migraines but my GP keeps telling me that it has many side affects, which I agree with. I had imsomnia, dry mouth and constipation so I dont really want to go back on it. i dont think my GP would put me back on it anyway. So I may ask about Nortriptyline when I see him next thurday 7th Oct. i am NEVER going back on Mirtazapine. It's rubbish when I was on it I noticed that I peed about 25 times a day and I dont drink that much fluids. I still pee a lot , I guess that is nerves. Thanks for the tip. UTC. Bernie08
There are still a lot of medications you can try. So far you tried a tetracylic, tricyclic, SSRI.
You can talk to your doctor about SNRIs like Cymbalta, Effexor or the "new Effexor'' called Pristiq.
Nortriptyline is a second generation of tricyclic. It is the active metabolite of amitriptyline that is demethylated in the liver. It is kinda like ''the new amiltriptyline with less side-effects.
