Tapering with xanax er from xanax

I was taking xanax for 10 years .the last two at 3mgs my md has me taking xanax xr 2mgs in am and .50 in the evening. He wants me to take prozac to a gradual increase to 60 mgs daily. I want off xanax but do not want to add more meds which I will have to eventually taper from. I am experiencing mild/moderate anxiety, occasional insomnia, and bouts of diarreha. He wants a very slow taper .25 reduction every two weeks. Can I do without the prozac, or will it really help with anxiety, I think I can deal with it but I do want to be as comfortable as possibel
