Tapering off Xanax

I have been on 1 mg. of Xanax 3 times a day since Feb.08.I feel its making me sick,almost like im going thru withdrawal from it even though Im on....so I called my DR. and asked if i could go back on Klonopin.He said yes but to taper off the xanax by 1 for a week......in the meantime go ahead and start Klonopin 0.5 mg 3 times a day and maybe in another week we could cut back some more on the xanax. Has anyone ever heard of tapering off xanax this way? Imscared to death of being on 2 benzos at the same time. Im desparate for advice,I havent started doing what he said yet.but i need off this xanax.Any thought out there

I can understand your fear...don't worry - there's plenty of information on the topic here on this forum. Do a search for xanax withdrawal using klonopin. You should be able to read some good info. - much of it, I believe, will be posted by Ryan. He's incredibly knowledgeable about klonopin.

This should get you started and hopefully, quiet some of your fears. I'm weaning off of xanax, but not using the klonopin as a replacement, so I can't offer you proper advice on this.

And, I do understand the withdrawal feeling - that's part of the downside of xanax - it has a very short half-life and its duration of action sometimes only lasts 4 hours in some people. It sounds like Klonopin was working for you, so good luck on making your switch-over.
