Using GABA to wean off of Xanax

Using GABA to wean off of Xanax

I've been on Xanax ER for over 3 years and over that time have titrated myself down to 1 mg of the ER per day.  I've tried a couple of times to drop it to the 0.5 mg ER, but have experienced increased inability to focus (racing thoughts, etc.) and had to go back to the 1 mg ER dose.

I've been researching the nutritional supplement GABA, and am wondering if anyone has any experience using it as a weaning tool for Xanax?  I'm considering taking the 0.5 mg ER dose of Xanax in the a.m., and following it with a low dose i.e. 250 mg GABA at bedtime.

Your thoughts?

GABA is not well absorbed, and can actually cause anxiety in some people.  The better way to take it is to take taurine and B6, which manufacture GABA in the system.  If that doesn't help, there are also herbal relaxants you can take, such as passionflower, valerian, kava that also work on GABA receptors, though aren't as strong as benzos.  However, you have to be careful working on GABA while you're taking a benzo, so you'd have to do this in close consultation with a psychiatrist willing to work this way or with a naturopath willing to work with your psychiatrist.  Another possibility are homeopathic remedies, which don't have many contraindications since they don't contain active ingredients.  Coffea cruda, for example, is supposed to help some with racing thoughts.  (It's basically the energy left in coffee after extreme dilution and shaking).  Good luck.
