Vistaril vs Klonopin

My doctor prescribed me Vistaril about 8 months ago to use as needed for anxiety attacks.  I have used about 15 of them in the last 8 months.  This drug makes me very drowsy the day after I take it.  I almost need 12-14 hours to sleep it off.  I can't do this as I have two small children, a full time job, and I'm a student.

A friend of mine mentioned that I should try clonazepam.  I was just wondering if anyone has tried both of these and what their experience is with it.  Do you take the clonazepam daily or just as needed.  I prefer a drug I can take when I'm feeling especially anxious.

I was also wondering if I should just ask my general practicioner for this.  I don't want to look like someone who just wants drugs.  I just want a prescription that I can take as needed and continue to function.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

OMG I have had the same things happened to me as well. I was placed on klonopin which worked just fine for me and once that doctor moved to another department in the medical mental health center I go to for anxiety depression and ptsd my new doctor told me she didn't like prescribing klonopin and was going to take me off of them even though I told her how well they worked for me by calming my nerves, allowing me to continue to think clearly, I was still able to work for Directv fulltime, was able to take care of my home and myself, could still read clearly, I wear glasses but my vision was doing ok, I could still interact freely with others both at work and outside of work,  but once she took me off of them and placed me on vistaril my health took a turn for the worse I could no longer do any of the things I mentioned above and also my memory just disappeared , I recently began passing out completely unconscious once while walking across the street in 4 lanes of rush hour traffic, 8 times while walking down 3 flights of concrete steps causing me to be rushed to the hospital ER, 3times while at home alone I woke up on my bathroom floor bloody face and ripped off nails bloody mouth, once in the lobby of the building I live in I was face down in front total strangers who live in the same building who all did nothing to help me ,and most recent one in the public library 3rd floor office I just with no warning hit the floor completely unconscious it was horrible so need less to say I am not taking them ever again I stopped 5 days ago and already feel like im getting back to my old self.

Wow, all of that from Vistaril or from getting off Klonopin? ( which I hear is hell) I take 1.5 Klonopin a day- scared to attempt to get off, although I doubt it helps me much. I take 1 Vistaril at night, no side effects or issues with it- helps me sleep....... but reading these posts makes me think I should quit that!!!!
Best to all and these crazy drugs we are on- I have found a lot of supplements that seem to work really well.
What supplements?  Make sure you're not overdoing it by targeting with the supplements the same neurotransmitters you're targeting with the drugs.  Obviously, you're not noticing that now, don't worry, but just a note of caution about that.  I'm with you on the klonopin -- was put on it so many years ago and never told the nature of benzos.

I am a 58yr young woman whose life was destroyed by a major breakdown mentally in 1999, age 42.  (I was hospitalized and removed from work that day. On SSD ever since.) I had been seeing a MSW for years and she recommended it was time for a shrink (no disrespect). From then until this very day I have settled with 2/100mg of Trazadone to sleep because I can't shut down my mind. Slight side affect for me is that it takes a while, in the morning, to feel like my brain is finally connected.

For my antidepressant I take Effexor HCL ER am/pm 150mg. I tried abilify, busbar, Zoloft and others that just did not agree with me or treat my symptoms adequately. Have been on the Effexor for over 20 yrs.

As for my severe anxiety, I have only used and been on Klonopin (generic Clonazepam). While I started at 1mg 3 x day, I am now on 2 mg 3 x day for over 20 years. I am well satisfied with my regimen however 0ur glorious US GOVT recently placed heavy regulations on all "street drugs" and they included this? It is not a narcotic however it is considered very addictive.

I can no longer get this scripted and am struggling to detox myself because there isn't a doctor that would help and my local hospital does not handle either process. No one wants to help once they hear Klonopin. Much research has been read on the web and it is said that specifically Klonopin is the worst of all meds/drugs to detox from and it can actually take years if not done properly. It is a detox that is unlike any other and requires monitoring and medical along with mental health support. NONE OF WHICH I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND IN 2 MONTHS.

I do not feel "sick" as I am stepping down from 6mg day but my anxiety is 10 miles higher, believe you me! I still need a shrink to provide for an alternative to cover my anxiety problems and now I am at the point where I need mental health intervention. I can't go back on Klonopin because to doctor in Ocean NJ will script it.

I feel so screwed, and screwed up by our Gov't. and my previous PCP, who dropped me because they didn't want to write these meds anymore, but where do I turn?

I am at a major crossroad and unable to make a move.

By the sounds of things here it doesn't seem that Vistaril is going to do the job for me.

May God bless us all and me as these next days I will be in a living hell.

AGAIN I DO NOT FEEL ANY SICKNESS AT ALL, JUST EXTREMELY HEIGHTENED ANXIETY CAUSING A MAJOR BALANCE ISSUE THAT CAUSES ME TO WALK VERY UNSTEADY AND FALL OFTEN. IT FEELS LIKE I AM STONED OUT OF MY MIND.

I realize this is an old post, but it still comes up in a google search about these meds.I have been on Vistaril for 6+ years.Vistaril is: an excellent nausea med,it works for anxiety,it boosts pain meds (makes them work better), & it's an ANTIHISTAMINE (allergy med...it is often given with pain meds to prevent nausea, & to stop the itching side effect which happens because narcotics release HISTAMINES). I was told all of this by the most empathetic Dr that I've ever had. I've also experienced it's benefits myself all of this time. I take it for ALL of the above reasons.I have no problems with it, but I am not as sensitive as most people are to certain meds. If you can tolerate Benadryl, then Vistaril shouldn't bother you.

I have also been on Klonopin for 10 years for Panic Disorder & GAD. It still works great at my starting dose of 1mg twice a day. I started out on Ativan & graduated to Klonopin when the Ativan wasn't working as well anymore, & Ativan isn't recommended for long term use. Klonopin  works better & lasts longer. I also have tinnitus (ears ringing severely & constantly from my illness) & Klonopin completely alleviates it. I have been out of Klonopin because I forgot (because of memory problems from my illness) to get it refilled, & it's the weekend, or a holiday, or I'm out of refills & my Dr has to email more in etc. I luckily have never had withdrawals from stopping Klonopin for several days. My anxiety & the tinnitus do come back with a vengeance though. I know some headache, & ear disorders have tinnitus as a symptom. It would be an off-label use, but Klonopin has been a lifesaver for me. Tinnitus can make the pain worse, & can drive you crazy..(not literally of course) ;) Imagine super high pitched ringing in your ears 24/7...it's terrible,& impossible to ignore, & difficult to sleep.

I want to mention my illness as it's way underdiagnosed, & very often mis-diagnosed (especially as migraines, or new persistent chronic daily headache syndrome). I have chronic recurring spontaneous CSF leaks, & Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension (SIH). If you have a chronic severe headache that gets better after you've been laying down, or reclined for around a half hour, & significantly worsens when sitting & standing...please tell your Dr &/or your neurologist about the positional aspect of your pain.I have too many symptoms to list from this syndrome because the entire brain & spine are affected. I now also have several other painful health problems. I was a very active healthy 26 year old female who woke up one day with the worst headache imaginable, & it's there 24/7...for 8 years now.

I am fully disabled back to/from that first day. Luckily it only took 2 months for me to be approved for full SS disability. When applying for disability make sure you have seen a Dr for ALL health problems (physical & mental)...preferably recently. Dr.s have to put a reason/diagnosis in your chart/on your paperwork for each visit. You want all diagnoses documented, so if possible see the Dr for one or two things at a time (even check up/reevaluatuon of old diagnoses). This makes all the difference in being approved, or not. Having mental & physical problems helps too. Most people who have severe medical problems get depression &/or anxiety. Please don't be too embarrassed, ashamed or proud to go to the Dr for these, or any other mental illness. Mental illness is as common as a cold, or the flu...& it can be the deciding factor that gets you approved for SSDI which can save you & your families livelihood.
I hope this info. about the meds and applying for disability helps someone. God Bless everyone with severe/chronic health problems, & their families. Let us all who believe pray for cures for all diseases, syndromes, etc. Sorry it's so long, and thank you for reading. :)

Hi..I ran into this post because I was trying to research some anti anxiety meds that'd be good for me to take seeing as I am on methadone and they're very strict about giving anything. What struck me about your post is that it sounds very similar to what I'm going thru.Growing up I always had headaches and nosebleeds when I was younger and backaches. It was always brushed off as "growing pains."As I got older I was able to control them a little better.
When I was 23 I was in an awful car accident and banged the left side of my head against the window. I also hurt my back and thru Mri  was told I had 2 lumbar herniated discs and scoliosis (which they never saw growing up) my left leg was also a few cm longer than my right leg and was given a lift in my shoe.I spent years just masking the pain with no real solutions. Then 5 yrs later I was in another car accident(hit head on,airbag went off,etc..)and this time my neck pain and headaches started up again.5 yrs later,a million "treatments" later and they're not "100%sure" where the pain is coming from and NOTHING helps.Anyways my point is ,for the Postville of yrs the headaches are UNBEARABLE.I never don't have one. They are so bad I miss work,I can't sleep, and I get anxiety attacks from the pain and stress.I was told I have a nasopharangeal cyst and that could be the cause, also told it was stress or migraines.some other symptoms I have are-I always feel like there's fluid in the back of my left ear(but nothing comes out) I'll spit up bloody mucus(never smoked in my life) and worse is I'll get these extreme stabbing pains behind my left eye down the side of my nose and also from the nape of my neck all along my jaw and temple. And it does seem to calm down when I lay down(just like yours) and it always feels Luke a bad sinus pressure, but nothing comes out. I've also had my tonsils and adnoids out.Just wondering if there's anything else you can tell me about ur case and how I should get diagnosed properly. (I was referred to neurologist and ENT but don't have apts yet) And does anything else I explained sound familiar to what you went thru? I too was very active and thin.I'm now 33(10yrs later) and I have gained about 65 lbs and am in chronic constant pain. My life is being stolen from me. I also have endometriosis which doesn't help with the headaches/pain. Sorry I wrote so much and I thank anyone who read my whole post. Any help, suggestions, etc.would be great help. Thank you so much. :)

I have extreme anxiety I haven't been able to leave my house in 2 months....my dr. Put me on celexa 10mg and Ativan .5 , neither one seemed to work as a matter of fact the Ativan made my anxiety worse i felt weird on it and at times it made me light headed! Had a doctors appt today and she upped my celexa to 20mg and when I told her about the Ativan she said if I couldn't take Ativan I wouldn't be able to handle other benzos....but I have to have something celexa is not enough on its own to take care of my anxiety and panic attacks .....so she decided to write me vistaril...I'm so scared of medicine...especially after reading some of the post about vistaril .I was wondering if vistaril doesn't work what should I do is there something else that might would help me ?

I was given Vistaril by my general practitioner and it works great for me.  then again, one of my main problems was panic attacks and insomnia.  Try asking for an anti-depressant like Zoloft to help it counteract the next day effects.  I currently take Xanax, Zoloft and Vistaril and all together they keep my panic attacks and sleep patterns normal.  I was on the verge of losing my job before I got these medications.

i currently take large doses of both clonazapam and vistiral and am being weaned off for we are trying to conceive in a month, i am having horrible withdrawals wake up in panic, shake, severe headaches they are both strong meds, strongest in fact I've been on everything else and it doesnt work so i am calling my doctor today, he says if benefits outway risks he will keep me on clonazepam during my pregnancy if it occurs. i am in a terrible state of mind right now, i lost my job because of my gad, it all depends on your body i guess. clonazepam i was on 6mg a day and vistiral 150mg a day and weaning down from those doses is like getting off meth, ive been there too in my past and it is a terrible feeling i know. while i was on both at high doses my anxiety diminished but now it is terrible so id take caution with these meds

I was on xannax for many years. My last rx was for 1 mg three times a day. It stopped working and I tried to get off of it. BIG MISTAKE!! The most awful experience of my LIFE!
I was rxed Klonopin 1mg three times a day, and no more xannax. The transition worried me, but it was a lifesaver for anxiety.  I have been on it for 1 month, and hope it doesn't stop working. The "calm" feelings last for hours, much different than xannax, or anything like it (ativan, valium) I would recommend it for anyone who suffers from anxiety.
I have a friend SUFFERING from visteral. She was on ativan, and although I have never taken Visteril, she is having an awful time with it. It makes her MORE ANXIOUS! I know that these drugs are all in the same family, and can't understand why it is making her feel so terrible. Some of you here seemed to have the same reaction.  I advised her to tell her doctor and maybe get the visteril changed to Klonopin, but she is worried that the dr. won't do it. A lot of dr's are weird when it comes to changing prescriptions, rather pigheaded if you ask me! I hope she has success, after reading your comments and knowing what the klonopin does for me, I must agree it is great and it gets me through the day without any stress or anxiety at all. Like a miracle drug for me!

I know this was posted about a year ago but am hoping you will see this anyway.  You said Klonopin is your every day lifeline to staying normal and Ativan is for emergency use, when ***** hits the fan.  I was always under the impression that Klonopin was a stronger medication that was given when Ativan or xanax is not cutting it any more.  Is this not the case?  I take Ativan for severe nausea and vomiting but am finding that I need to take it for anxiety as well and the dose that I need to take is rather high, as I am on a lot of strong meds and my tolerance level to everything is high.  I want to save my Ativan for times when the vomiting attacks are really bad, not just when i am anxious or just nauseated.  They gave me Vistaril but it is like taking nothing.  Would klonopin be helpful for me to take on a more regular basis while saving the Ativan for the severe nausea and vomiting?  In your opinion?

Txern you were not taking 15g's of clonazapam. That tolerance is too high to be possible. Maybe 15mg's. Please do not post b.s. Yes benzo withdrawl is horrible as is opiate withdrawl. If taken as prescribed though, klonopin should help you much more than vistaril.

if yu start with klonopin, be prepared to deal with the devil. benzo's are if not the most addictive substances on earth., petty close.ou can get off heroine fin a week but benz's can have w/d effects years. they're talking  mostly about xanax but all are extremely addicting. i had to take 15g's of klon to calm me down alond with seroquel, lots of kratom. and beer.just to calm down. just be very, very careful. some people can handle it short term fewer people long term-getting off.-very difficult, but most people like me have addictive personalities- i took 10g's today and don't really know what i'm going to do. be honest with yourself and more power to you if  you can stay at a certain dose. but you do biuld tolerance fairly quickly and then you start to say just a little more.. if you can stick to it short term, you'll be ok but the longer you use the harder it is to get off. don't let anyone fool you, benzo's are  horribly addictive and i strongly suggest you do your homework before trying. i've been on benzo's for 5 years and if you want to discuss it contact me at ***@****  good luck. ernie i can't believe there's people telling you to get on it .there is a whole plethora of natural herbs that you would not believe would help. please try this before jumping into klon. things loke 5-htp, st.jw, suntheanine, phrmagaba, etc... now if you   have severe anxiety/panic attack disorder and if it stops you from functioning, then benzo's are absolutely the best. otherwise, look into alternative remedies. thanks for listening and i;m here for you. god bless! ernie

Hi,
I have been somewhat in the situation that you are in.  My doctor had me on 1 mg. Xanax 4 times a day.  After a year or so, I sat down with my doctor, and explained that the xanax was not working as well as it once did.  He kept me on the same dose of xanax and added Vistaril.  It only took a couple of days before I was back in his office being taken off of the Vistaril.  I had severe headaches not to mention that I flipped and totaled my brand new pathfinder.  I cant really say that the Vistaril had a major part in the accident, but my reflexes were off.  Anyway, I'm still on the Xanax and instead of taking 1 pill 4 times a day, I talk 2 pills twice a day.  My doctor didn't tell me to do that, but I found that it worked for me and didn't want to ask him to increase my dose since I'm already on several very strong medicines.  My advise would be to find a doctor like I did that will sit down with you and listen that everything you have to say and understand.  More than likely he will put you on a benzodiazapine of some kind.  Those are really the only "nerve" pills that actually work.  Be very careful, they are highly addictive and you can easily overdose.  I actually give all of my medications to my mother and get them from her when I'm supposed to take them.  I hope this information helps.  Feel free to E-Mail me if you have any questions @ ***@**** .   P.S. I'm a medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina in case you were wondering if any of this info was correct.  good luck.

The best thing that you can do is to get a benzodiazepine prescribed like clonazepam, but if the doctor absolutely refuses to prescribe a benzodiazepine to you then there is something that is available over the counter that actually works, it is called Kava, make sure to only use the recommended amount of Kava other wise it can put stress on the liver, it is the only thing that is available over the counter that works, I'm speaking from experience, not just from what I read

Take Care

Klonopin works great, for both the physical and mental of anxiety, especially if you have it 24/7 "gad"
Drs like to think Antidepressants are the key to anxiety, but thats just not true all the time.

They will probably give you a hard time about asking for it, ask for buspar first "non benzo" and try that, if that doesnt work then go to the clonazepam "klonopin"
Vistaril is nothing but Benadryl really, most of the qualities come from the ANTIHISTAMINE, which I guess if you have allergies would work pretty good, lol
They cut me off my klonopin and tried giving me that ****, and I told them that was the first thing I was given when My anxiety started, and it did nothing, she just looked at me like I was stupid and didnt know myself.
I guess they feel people suffering from anxiety are mentally incompetent of making a real decisions, and accurate needs of medicines.

Sue 357, I was on klonipin for more than 3years and neber exoerienced any "addiction" properties like my "Quack" doctor was all worried about. I have massive panic and anxiety attacks and the klonipin was literally my lifeline to a normal life. Well, recently I have had to travel quite a bit due to my job and have called the "quack" to ask if I could get a 5-7 day early refill. Because of this he and his nurse decided that I was a drug addict or a dealer and cut me off and put me on paxil and vistaril. Let me tell you, it's like taking a placebo. My panic attacks and anxiety have seemed to heighten, in my opinion they are both worthless pharmaceuticals. So then they put me on seraquel, which I might ad is for people with bi-polar disorder and psychotic behaviour neither of which I have ever been diagnosed with. The only thing it did for me was made me sleep for 26, yeah 26 hours. And when I woke up I felt like **** for two days. Doctors today it seems to me are too worried about a handful of patients who abuse these benzodiazipines(valium, ativan klonipin etc. and don't give a damn about treating the patient in the fear that they might become dependant on these meds. The old shrink that i was seeing left the practice and regularly prescribed me ativan and valium without any worries about me becoming a drug addict. I'll tell you it is hard to find a doctor that is willing to listen to what has worked for you in the past. They always have a "better solution with some better **** that is most of the time very expensive.

Thanks for listening to my babbling. hemispheres65

I  totally agree with you here. I have panic anxiety attacks not just feeling anxious but when I get very upset I go into a real panic attack can't breathe, can't get my breath feel scared. I didn't have these until after I was beaten by an x-boyfriend who nearly killed me.  I was prescribed Ativan 1mg x3 day. If you suffer with panic/anxiety attacks, you can't  just take the medication as needed because by the time you think about it you've already been into a full-blown attack. I've recently been cut completely off after going to a new psychiatrist whom I saw one day she left the practice to go back to her home state. So now only see a Nurse Practitioner.  I have what's called Sjogren's syndrome which causes extremely dry eyes. The night before I had torn a whole chunk of my cornea off, size of the tip of your pinky finger.  I didn't know it at the time but had been tearing and crying all night basically with it. I couldn't put make up on, and had no sleep. I know I looked absolutely horrible. First thing this doctor said to me was "are you all right, are you all right!  You don't look all right did you drive here I hope you didn't drive. You look all spaced out." Then proceeded to give me a dementia task asking me to remember three words then telling me that I need to subtract three from 24 and keep going until she tells me to stop. Gives me one other task and then asked me to tell her what the first three words were.  She immediately cut my sleep medication in half as well as my Ativan and told me I was going to be on a taper. I know she thought I looked like a drug attic I did not even know that I had torn the corneal off. I told her I had an emergency eye doctors appointment after hers to check my eye. They  continue to make me feel like I am some kind of a drug addict. In Ohio they have the OARRS reporting system now  to check and monitor your drugs to give them a total of opiate levels. However they are only supposed to use it as a tool and if they are not the prescriber of the medication they really don't have a necessity to run the report. I can tell you that Ambien is not a barbiturate according to their list, but Klonipin and Ativan are. Then of course pain meds.  They really only need to check it every 90 days however mine says they're going to run the report every time they see me. I was beaten by a fellow who became addicted to drugs he nearly killed me. To make me feel like I am some type of a drug addict absolutely infuriates me that I am being treated that way.  Plus you are right if you decide you want to switch to a different doctor they look at that is you trying to seek drugs. Such a shame that the people who abuse medications selling them have made it bad for the ones who actually need to be treated. My doctor put me on Vistaril also it does nothing but make me extremely sleepy. I recently nearly Totaled my car and I'm certain it was because of that medication making me drowsy.

Hi.  I have never been on Vistaril, but have been on Klonopin for a few years.  I really like it and it works well.  One good thing is that it has a long half life so stays in your system longer.  I use to take, as needed, but do to GAD, I now take 3 times a day.  However, I am going to talk to him about tapering down.  I notice some drowsiness, but nothing like what you are mentioning.  Hope this helps.

I was placed on klonopin which worked just fine for me and once that doctor moved to another department in the medical mental health center I go to for anxiety depression and ptsd my new doctor told me she didn't like prescribing klonopin and was going to take me off of them even though I told her how well they worked for me by calming my nerves, allowing me to continue to think clearly, I was still able to work for Directv fulltime, was able to take care of my home and myself, could still read clearly, I wear glasses but my vision was doing ok, I could still interact freely with others both at work and outside of work,  but once she took me off of them and placed me on vistaril my health took a turn for the worse I could no longer do any of the things I mentioned above and also my memory just disappeared , I recently began passing out completely unconscious once while walking across the street in 4 lanes of rush hour traffic, 8 times while walking down 3 flights of concrete steps causing me to be rushed to the hospital ER, 3times while at home alone I woke up on my bathroom floor bloody face and ripped off nails bloody mouth, once in the lobby of the building I live in I was face down in front total strangers who live in the same building who all did nothing to help me ,and most recent one in the public library 3rd floor office I just with no warning hit the floor completely unconscious it was horrible so need less to say I am not taking them ever again I stopped 5 days ago and already feel like im getting back to my old self.

kLONOPIN IS 100% BETTER THAN VISTERIL.   oJNE OF MY DOCTORS WEENED ME OF KLONOPIN, AND ON TO VISTERIL, AND i FEEL NOTHING FROM VISTERIL,  i NOW HAVE PANIC ATTACKS AGAIN, MOOD SWINGS AND EXTREME ANXIETY AGAIN.   i AM PISSED, LOST MY JOB, CANT FUNCTION, AND MADE A BIG MISTAKE BY GOING TO A PSYCH AS RECOMMENDED BY MY PRIMARY DOCTOR.
