What help for panic attacks?????

My 20 year old daughter has started experiencing these panic attacks, and also has bad head aches. She is in her third year of college, and these have only started this year. This is really killing me, to say nothing about what it is doing to her!! ANY advice AT ALL I could really use!!! Thanks!!!

I always get worse when I'm taking classes.

She's probably being overloaded right now. If she has a job, she should consider cutting hours (if at all possible, I know it isn't at times).

Most schools have counselors available, so I'd recommend that. They're trained to assist with school-related anxiety.

Chewing gum helps me. Not even kidding. It keeps the mind focused elsewhere.

Lack of sleep will worsen anxiety symptoms, and I can imagine with classes she may not be getting the rest she needs. Sleep is vital.

Also, a restful hobby helps. I listen to music and write.

Exercise is a huge help to me. Exertion really alleviates a lot of my anxiety. Also, going for walks.

She should keep a log of when the attacks set in, and try to figure out what her triggers are. Most panic attacks have triggers.

Mine are fatty foods, lack of sleep, alcohol and stress. The food and alcohol due to GERD.

Hi,  Well, I'd encourage her to be careful with the Xanax in particular.  That is scheduled and with college students----  you want to make sure she'd not do anything like drink alcohol with it, etc.

Zoloft is a great medication and does help a good deal with anxiety.  Taking it slowly to get started helps keep the start up side effects to be less.  These medications can have some side effects in the begining and they go away rather quickly as the drug gets up and running in the body.  And the zoloft can take 6 to 8 weeks to be fully working. during that time, she can try the Xanax sparingly for episodes that seem overwhelming.

** I'm really glad she is seeing a counselor as well as the absolute best way to overcome anxiety is the combination of medication and talk therapy.

lots of luck to your daughter!

The drugs are relatively benign. I was on Paxil for three months and then was removed. With what she's going through, meds may cover her. Should she decide to come off of them, she'll clear up.

Remind her it can take up to a month for meds to kick in. And should she decide to come off of them, she needs to work out a plan with her physician.

Thanks to all of you. I feel a bit more in control now. I did talk her into going to the campus clinic. They gave her Zoloft and Xanax and a couple months of councelling. I just worry about the drugs.

Thanks. I am not sure of the times and amounts because she isn't that forthcoming with me. She goes to school out of state. :(

Hi there.  Panic attacks are very uncomfortable.  I would watch this closely because life is full of stress from this point forward.  Once a woman enters her career and gets into 'real life' things, the stress sticks around.

I'd try to encourage her to get some help.  I'd personally discuss counseling with her.  While school counselors are decent, I'd prefer if my child went to true psychologist in private practice if your insurance will accomodate that.

Panic disorder is treatable and there are several medications that work really well for it.  These medications are taken on a daily basis and help with overall anxiety as well.  Often a combination of medication and talk therapy along with some lifestyle things like regular exercise, eating right, journaling, etc. help.

good luck to your daughter!

Well i sure hate she is going thru this. I 2 suffer from panic disorder and its really hard! Is she on any meds? I just recently started taking meds. If she don't want to take meds then she can do other things like cut out caffeine and she can start exercising. On utube she can listen to some relaxation videos. Do they just happen all the sudden or only at certain times?
