What is happening chemically?

by whiteorchid, Dec 07, 2007 08:25AM
I have had pretty much every anxiety symptom you can think of...and thankfully most of them have died down, but I'm still experiencing leg symptoms (heaviness from knee down and tingling on and off) on a daily basis - 24/7.  I will notice the internal shaking as well but it's not as strong as it has been.  Lately my lower back has been hurting but it's that time of the month and I'm so thin now that sitting down almost hurts my tailbone, so maybe it's related to that!!

My doctors seem to think the leg symptoms are caused by anxiety.  Now, I don't have weakness or jelly legs - it's the opposite.  It started with buzzing/tingling/muscle twitching - progressed to severe muscle aches and now I'm left with this heavy feeling from the knee down (lack of circulation - excess carbon dioxide)?

I guess I'm trying to understand what exactly happens chemically in the body with GAD?  I'm not talking about panic attacks, which I've had as well (where I've had symptoms for 20 minutes that go away) but more the everyday low grade anxiety that we feel on a daily basis leaving us with these weird and scary symptoms all the time.  Can anyone explain it to me to give me peace of mind?  I'm going to ask my doctors, too, but I'm sure a lot you on here (going through it like me) could probably explain it in better terms!

If I understand it better (how the body is working chemically and causing these symptoms) I can have a little more peace of mind concerning my leg symptoms.

Hello, I understand how you want to know what your body is doing, my psychologist gave me a drawing showing the Sympathetic nervous system and the Parasympathetic nervous system.  Its the Sympathetic one that comes into play with anxiety and panic attacks and triggers parts of your body to repond.  Have a look on the web and see if you can find more info, I dont want to tell you anything that may not be correct.  All I know is its sure is what happened to me, on numerous scales.

I have started medication a week ago and cant tell you how much relief I have got today is the best day for months.  I tried to do it on my own and just lost so much weight from not eating even now that is one of my major worries.  But I know it will come bit by bit, just like I got sick, bit by bit without even realising what was happening.

Hope this help.  God Bless
