What I'd like to know is what is the half life of Xanax and what is the half life of Ativan.

Thanks,
Andy

Xanax as an faster onset of action, by mouth it's take around 10-15 minutes before you notice it's effect BUT it's the benzo with the shoter half-life around 6-12 hours.

The Ativan onset of action don't kick in very fast, normally take 1-2 hours before you feel something, unless you use the one who dissolve under the tongue, and the half-life is around 10-20 hours, it's action on the anxiety last longer than the Xanax, but it's milder also... not enough to kill a panic attack completly...

And remember that everyone is different... and also each benzo act differently and some of them are better for a panic disorder, other are better for general anxiety... even if they all affect the Gaba-A receptors in the brain... The ativan have a strong amnesic effect and may not be suitable for panic attacks and better before a surgery...that's my experience and no wonder why it's giving very often before a surgery...the Xanax is better to kill a panic attack, even if it's not very effective to stop a panic attack who is already started with a benzo because they all take some times before reaching a peak level in the blood and the Clonazepam-Klonopin is better for anticipatory anxiety and prevent panic... The Valium have a stronger muscle relaxant effect and for sedation in case of insomnia but will not be very powerful for a panic disorder....

And for the Xanax usually 0.5mg = 1 mg of Ativan...
