Where to go for help

by virgogrl73, Oct 14, 2008 09:16AM
I almost died about 2 years ago from massive blood clots in my lungs.  I am significantly overweight which has also caused some health problems, so far nothing serious but I live in a state of constant fear and anxiety that something is going to happen.  I am at the point now that I don't know if my symptoms are real or in my head.  I recently broke out with a severe case of hives and don't know if I could have brought it on myself.  My dr doesn't take me seriously, she thinks I'm overreacting and is very condescending.  She gave me xanax and told me to take it whenever I felt I need it.  Can anyone recommend any good books?  How do I find a therapist?  I can look up my insurance but do I just pick one at random?  Any other advice?

First of all, you definitely need to change doctors. I too have anxiety disorder and I am also a huge hypochondriac. My doctor is aware of this but she still gives me the time and concern every patient deserves. You need to see someone else. Secondly, have you made any effort to lose weight? Exercise is good for the body and mind you know! It is a huge stress releiver and will probably help quell some stress that you are suffering worrrying about your health. If you FEEL healthy through exercise and proper nutrition, it would probably make a world of difference in your life.
About the Hives... hives are often brought on in stressful situations, it is entirely possible (and even likely) that you brought it on yourself.
To find the right therapist for you is always a guessing game... I would just look on the internet for docs in your area and see what kind of info they have online about them... That's the best way to go. Also, don't keep going to a therapist you feel isn't right for you... be picky!!!

I agree with Mungies77, if you have no confidence in your doctor then you need to sign up with a new one. For people that are over sensitive to their health I think that it is imperative that we trust out doctors and feel somewhat reassured by what they say. The chances are that your current doctor is right though and that there is nothing seriously wrong with you. Despite her manner she wouldn't let a bad illness go unnoticed and just send you on your way, but I think that it is important that you can trust your doctor.
Would suggest taking the Xanax when you need it and see if that helps at all. Hives are often a result of stress or an allergy so please do not over worry about what could be causing it if you have already seen your doctor about it.
I think that you are well within your rights to be anxious over your health after what you have been through, it sounds like you a god awful time and there was something wrong with you.
I am afraid that I cannot comment on a therapist as I am in the UK and we get what we are given on the NHS and have no say in the matter.
Good luck
