I have been taking Xanax for quite a while now, I'm almost embarrassed to say how much I take a day. No other anti depressant worked for me, so Xanax is all I take. I know I need to taper off, at one point I wanted to quit cold turkey, but I know that isn't a safeSafe driving for teens Safe sex thing to do. I do suffer from anxiety, stress, you name it. Because addictionDrug abuse and dependence runs in my familyBirth control and family planning Choosing a primary care provider Ewing’s sarcoma Family troubles - resources, I am at a point where I need to get off of this medication, and deal with stress another way. My doctor advised me that if I switch to Ativan, it will be easier to taper off and eventually get off the meds completely. I need to know, if I do stop cold turkey, how long will the withdrawl last, or is taking the Ativan my best way to taper off completely?

Your doctor is an idiot, find another one.
Ativan is no better than Xanax in regard to tolerance, and Xanax is twice as potent as Ativan. You would require double the amount of Ativan to replace the Xanax. So, if you are currently taking 4 mg of Xanax daily, you'd require 8 mg of Ativan. NOT THE ANSWER!
I can't offer you any further suggestions without knowing the exact dose of Xanax that you are currently taking. I need the exact dosage.
