Zolaft or Prozac while TTC and Pregnant

by Mammaof3boys, Jun 17, 2008 07:27AM
Hi there, I went to my OB yesterday and since my miscarriage I have been suffering with anxiety and panics.  I have not been able to get pregnant since my miscarriage (we have been TTC since February).  The Dr. feels my strees/anxiety is a factor.  They recommend me going on either Zolaft, Prozac or Paxil.  I have heard of some issues with Paxil which they say now studies have shown its okay but I would not want to take the chance since there were issues before...however i wanted to see if anybody has been on any of these drug treatments while TTC and pregnant and have a healthy baby.  I would appreciate any feedback.  Thank you.

Hi there...welcome.  First of all, please accept my sympathies for your loss.  I had a late pregnancy loss at 19 weeks, so I know what you're going through...it really is very hard.

Of course the decision to take any medication during pregnancy is one you will need to make after close consideration with your doc, weighing the pros and cons.

I will tell you that I remained on a low dose of Lexpro during one of my pregnancies without any problems.  For me, at the time....it simply was not wise for me to stop taking it....I was having a HUGE amount of anxiety and depression.  Plus, my doctor and I discussed that I was actually going to be at risk for worsening anxiety/depression issues due to the pregnancy itself.

It was not the easiest decision, b/c the doctor couldn't give me any gurauntees, he just shared with me that a lot of his patients have taken AD's while pregnant, and he had not ever seen anything happen as a result.  My husband, myself and my doctor finally made the decision for me to stay on the Lexapro I had been taking prior to getting pregnant...and thankfully, everything worked out well for me....my son is just fine.

Hope this helps a bit.  Best of luck to you.

I am sorry for your loss.  Just to add to what nursegirl said, deciding on what AD to use can be a little bit of trial and error because you will run into multiple opinions on what works and what doesn't.  One person my swear by one AD while another one absolutely hates it.  While I have never been pregnant, which would be a miracle if I was because I am a guy, I am a proponent of ADs while talking it through with a therapist.  Best of luck to you and please keep us posted.
