Zoloft and weight gain

Hi all- I have been taking 50 mg of Zoloft for a little over a year, and I have gained about 15-18 lbs. I am very upset about the weight gain, and I am trying to figure out if it is the Zoloft or not. I also drink about 1-2 glasses of wine per evening. Could it be the wine? Or just the Zoloft? I took Zoloft over ten years ago for a year and a half and did not experience this weight gain. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

The above is pretty exhaustive on this, I just wanted to add there is a book about this called the Anti-Depressant Survival Guide.  Although I think the diet included in it is not a very good one, it does suggest ways to alter your lifestyle if your antidepressant is working but you're gaining weight.  It's written by a functional physician, a psychiatrist who practices not only medicine along with psychiatry but also integrated medicine.

Hi there.  Well, it is hard to say definitively.  Antidepressants can cause weight gain including Zoloft.  AND, we also can gain weight as time goes on, our own eating habits, etc.  Have you tried to lose the weight?  I would perhaps cut down on the wine drinking, evaluate your diet, and add in more exercise (and a good multi vitamin) and see if that has any effect.  And remember, any time we want to lose weight, it's best to go slow.  And it will feel REALLY slow at first.  Don't get discouraged.

Do you think the Zoloft is helping?  You are on a really low dose.  If you generally feel it is effective for you, then it is a toss up if you want to risk going off it or not.  If it is working--  I'd try to manage weight via diet and exercise and see if you can make a difference.  If you feel it is not working or aren't sure, then perhaps talking to your doctor about another option would be best.

Wishing you the best and we are hear to help and to bounce ideas off of with.  We also have a healthy cooking forum, diet and fitness and weight loss communities that are great for support and ideas.  good luck
