anxiety and thyroid

Has anyone on this forum ever had anxiety attack with anxious thoughts come on because of the thyroid.  I have had two attack which one was strong enough to put me in the emergency room and then to day hospital for 2 months.  They told me it was because of my thyroid and gave me different medications to treat it.  One of the medications was risperadol which can be used for bi-polar and schizephenia but for me in a very low dose  helped with the anxiety.  I ws on it for 7 months and went off of it quickly per doctor, he said I was taking such a small dose it was a wonder that it worked but it did.  Anyway for about 2 weeks I was fine and then boom in the middle of the night I felt physically terrible and the next day started with anxiety.  I fought it for about a week taking a little lorazapam but finally went back on the risperadol yesterday.  I think my thyroid is in the normal range right now and am wondering what would still cause the anxiety.  anybody got any experience with this?   Thanks   linda

Hello Linda. Ihave hypothyroidism and anxiety/panic attack issues. The first panic attack I had was right after I was put onto levothyroxine. It was 100mcg and too strong of a dose for me. This triggered a panic attack. A few monthes later I started having the attacks regularly. Ending up in the emergency room a few times. Through therapy I have realized that my body was under stress not only because of the thyroid disease but other personal things that had been happening in my life. Yes the thyroid disease and meds caused the first anxiety attack. But from what I told it's like your brain remembers that. So now when your body is stressed or "triggered" it goes into panic mode. It's like it remembers that and assumes that now this is the way we handle stress. I have found out since that I have PTSD. If I had never had the panic attack I may not still be suffering from them now. However I would still have PTSD. Does any of this make sense? I'm not the best at articulating what is in my head, lol! You will find alot of ppl here who have both problems. I believe there is a link. The thyroid regulates so much of your bodies hormones. I have found DR.'s that say there is no link and Dr.'s who say there is. Good luck in your healing process!
