I have had a high heart rate for many years, (usually 100 when I'm calm) and used to take xanex. That quit working and my heart rate continued to spike several times a week. After going to the emergencyEmergency airway puncture Emergency contraception many times, (they found nothing wrong with my heart), my cardiologist finally diagnosed me with tycardia this year. I was put on zoloft, 2 tabs 100 mg. each a day and clonozepam 1 mg. as needed or three times a day.
My heart rate is still continuing to spike (up to 120) at least once a week. I am not doing any over excessive workouts or having panicPanic disorder Panic disorder with agoraphobia symptoms at the time my heart rate spikes. But now with the medication, I am able to calm myself down instead of panicking and making my heart rate go higher.
Has anyone gone thru this and were you given different medication that was better that what I am taking?
Thank you.
Inquire with your physican regarding a cardio-selective beta-blocker, such as Atenolol or Metoprolol. Of the two, Atenolol is more cardio-selective, and is less likely to produce untoward adverse effects. 25-50 milligrams of Atenolol will resolve your tachycardia. Atenolol peaks very rapidly following an oral dose, leading to prompt resolution of your symptoms. Atenolol works by blocking the effects of Noradrenaline (Adrenaline) on the myocardium, reducing both heart rate and contractility.
One of the best drug combinations for cardiac manifestations of anxiety/panic is Atenolol and Clonazepam. The Clonazepam acts on the CNS, thereby reducing the secretion of Noradrenaline, and the Atenolol covers the sympathetic manifestations of anxiety/panic, such as tachycardia. The two drugs work in concert together.
Try to keep the Clonazepam dosage under 2 mg daily. 3 mg is a fairly large dosage, and increases the risk of developing a tolerance to the clinical effect. 1.5 mg (0.5 mg, three times daily) is a more reasonable dosage. Rarely does a larger dosage (in excess of 1.5 mg daily) result in greater efficacy.
Atenolol 50 mg and Clonazepam, 0.5 mg, t.i.d. is a good starting point. Speak with your physician. it should be borne in mind that Zoloft typically increases the sympathetic discharges in the case of panic disorder with cardiac manifestations. Zoloft is activating (stimulating). The idea is to block Norepinephrine, not increase Serotonin, which may only compound the issue.
