Ok so I have been to doctors so much, Had this feeling of something stuck in my throat on and off for years. They thought it was acid reflux started taking medication and it did not work took them for 6 months, while being on them i started have burning feeling in throat and mouth felt like it was burning, still have it it has been months, I have had so many tests done barium swallow normal 24 ph probe normal blood test all normal, so my question is this can anxiety cause you to have a burning feeling in your throat and mouth, and the feeling of something stuck in your throat only on one side? I had my tonsills out and the feeling went away for 3 months,So I can see how it could be anxiety, but have been taking antitriptalyn for 2 months and its not helping, I keep thinking its lpr layanoganl reflux but from what i have read is that for lpr to happen both sphincters have to malfunction,? so since my ph probe came back normal so I guess it cant be, but my question is,is can anxiety cause all this? thanks
Acid reflux can cause all you describe. Did your doctor try different medications for this? If one doesn't work, it's best to move on to something else. Certain foods make it worse and keeping your head elevated at night helps. I know anxiety can cause the feeling of something being stuck in your throat, but not sure about the burning sensation. But acid reflux causes stomach acid to back up into your throat and this can lead to burning and pain, as well as the feeling of something being stuck in your throat. It may be both that are affecting you. If your reflux medication isn't working try a different one, and watch what you eat, some foods will make it worse. Take care...
Yes they did many different ones, trial for 6 months, had barium swallow done normal, no inflamation (inflammation) in throat 24hr probe negative, So they are saying anxiety, I saw a nerologist and he thinks it is something nerve wise I had this feeling of something stuck in my throat had a tonsillectmey and the feeling went away for 3 months, so that is why they think it something with my nerves in brain sending wrong messages, so they are trying somethings so we will see, another thing it never bothered me when I was pregent with my daughter, and they said if it were acid reflux it would have been worse. And that when I was on the ppis I got worse burning mouth and i was on 2x a day ppi and zantac. my nerologist was saying how the brain can send wrong messages to your body, My ent looked at my throat with the camera and i saw it on the tv monitor and he saw no inflamation (inflammation) and that was last week, he said if it is burning as bad as you say it is there should be some inflamation (inflammation) in my throat and there was not any!! So I guess your brain can send these messages that your throat is burning when it really is not because they would have seen something!!
Sounds like you can definitely rule out GERD, (acid reflux) and a whole bunch of other possible conditions. I can't think of any other tests you might try. I can only imagine how frustrating this must be. Your neurologist may be on to something with his theory of nerve damage with the brain sending incorrect messages. Anxiety can cause feelings of something being stuck in the throat, feelings of not being able to swallow, feelings of constriction, but I've personally never heard anyone say anything about a burning sensation. And you don't mention any other anxiety symptoms. In fact, you really don't sound anxious at all...........frustrated, yes, maybe even a little angry, but I don't get a feeling of anxiety from you at all.
I'm sitting here wracking my brain thinking about where I would go next if I was in your shoes. You've been to your PCP, you've seen a gastroenterologist, you've seen a neurologist.............what other "OLOGIST" is left? I keep thinking about you saying that after you had your tonsils out, this feeling went away for three months...........seems like there's a clue in there we're missing! Your tonsils go away and so does the burning but three months later it's back..........what did the tonsils being gone stop for those three months? It's a real mystery. So many things to consider. Allergies? A reaction to something you use in your mouth............a new toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitener strips or trays? A gum or hard candy you've taken up using? A spice that you've recently begun cooking with? I used to love cinnamon, but a few years ago after chewing some cinnamon gum, I realized that my tongue felt like it was burned. I didn't connect it to the gum for a very long time. Now I can't tolerate anything with cinnamon in it or I'll get the burned tongue feeling. Neither my doctor nor my dentist could explain the sudden intolerence for cinnamon. Their recommendation? Stop using it. DOH! I did and my tongue no longer burns.
I'd probably talk to my ENT again and see what he/she would recommend my next step be. You're not crazy so there has to be a reason. We just gotta figure out who can figure it out!
Please let me know what sort of dx you end up with. I'm very interested.
I wish you the very best.
Thanks so much for talking, I think i do have anxiety but i don't know if anxiety is causing all of this. My ent sent me to the nerologist so I guess that could mean something? I have read on burning mouth syndrome and usually a vitamin definciney or dental problems and it also said anxiety or depression issues, I can say that is feeling has taken over and that I think about it constantly and sometimes when I'm busy I don't notice it as much!! that should say something, before all the throat stuff it was my back and it hurt all the time and had panic attacks, then that went away and it went to my throat, feeling of something stuck in it on the left side, and like i said did not bother me when i was preganet then it came back and had tonsills out because of be sick alot and it went away for 3 months!!!:) Then back:( A ent said silent reflux lpr but from what i have read is that both sphincters have to fail or not be working right!! So I have been thinking about this all the time drives me nuts, and I think It has taken over!! My ent said that with as bad as the burning in my throat and mouth the day he looked with the camera he would have seen inflamation (inflammation) but he said it looks ok!! So I think I'm scared because people keep telling me its lpr, but I got worse on meds so dose not sound right? My main doctor told me I think after you had your tonsills out you thought It was gonna fix the problem and then when I got back to normal life the feeling came back and i panic, the burning never came until this May so that is why im wondering with the burning mouth, like its manafesting its self in this way now, because I never had burning before!! But I think they would have seen something on the ph probe and barum swallow ct scan and inflmation in my throat but nothing!!! My main doctor told me that it is not lpr but its hard for me to believe her, thats where i think its a anxiety taking over !! I will keep u posted thanks so much
