combining melatonin with psych meds

im battling severe insominina from meds that ive been taking. effexor, seroquel, remeron.  the doctor has been decreasing dosages of effexor and remeron while increasing seroquel. this has produced no results and im at my witts end going on 4hrs in 48 hrs of horrible, sweaty, flinching sleep. im getting so desperate that im willing to try anything at this point. has anyone had any luck with melatonin and psych meds

Melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal (say: "pin-ee-all") gland. Melatonin may help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up. Melatonin can be used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep).

Some people who have taken melatonin have reported sleepiness, headache, a "heavy-head" feeling, stomach discomfort, depression or feeling hungover. Further study is needed to find out more about melatonin's side effects, especially delayed or long-term effects. For example, we don't know if melatonin causes problems when taken with other medicines.

My doctor once suggested that I take melatonin for insomnia while I was taking psychotropic medications. It didn't have any effect on me.

Both Remeron and Seroquel can effect sleep. I suggest you speak with your doctor and let him/her what is going on.  He/she can prescribe medication on a short-term basis that might  help. And, based on your statement you should make that call immediately, since long term lack of sleep can cause serious physiological and psychological problems.
